Favourite Derek Sherinian works:

DT: FII & ACoS
Solo: Planet X
Planet X: Universe
BCC: Black country

What I like about FII, is that even though it's Dream Theater, I can hear the Planet X sound during certain moments on the album, and being familiar with Planet X and most of Derek's solo albums, it's cool to notice those things. My appreciation for FII went up a lot after being familiar with PX and DS solo for a while.

Yes, but I hear that Sherinian sound, it's very distinct. He uses a lot of similar keyboard textures on his solo albums and Planet X albums, as he did on FII.

I didn't listen to the whole thing, only the first 2 tracks and the title track. But based on the first 2 songs, it seems the jazz influence has been brought back on this new one.

Well yea, I thought you understood that. Planet X and much of Derek's solo stuff has that type of sound, mostly because of his keyboard patches. It's that dark, outer space, futuristic sound.

after my initial disappointment, i came around. rather quickly, in fact. 1 1/2 spins =  :-\    2 1/2 spins =  ;D :metal

after the 6 spins in the past 60 or so hours, i'm now over 10 spins total and finding this album a lot of fun. maybe not gonna like it quite as much as past efforts, but derek set my expectations very high over the course of his solo/planet x career.

now if only i would come around on new opeth (6 spins and still waiting to be  :eek 'd)

I've never really liked Instrumental music and I hate LTE :D
But I decided to get Derek Sherínian's Oceana and WOW  :o !!!!!
This is awesome!  I've never really heard of this guitarist , Steve Stevens, but He surely does amazing job at the track Oceana.
I'd love to hear Soundscapes like this in the upcoming DT album.

Derek is just awesome!

Maybe I should try more Instrumental music!

You either are very young or you slept through the 80s.  Steve Stevens is mostly known for his work with Billy Idol or for his contributions to Michael Jackson's Dirty Diana.

Why, isn't he cute?

those were the 80s  :yarr

Apart from his work for Billy Idol I would recommend Black Light Syndrome (Bozzio, Levin, Stevens) a more jam orientated instrumental prog album.

Am I the only one who finds Oceana one of Derek's most consistently great albums?

I put it up there with the last two Planet X albums. Every track is fun and energetic. It's like Derek time jumped to 1976, grabbed a little bit stylistically from Jeff Beck and Jan Hammer Group, then came back to 2011 and recorded the album. Plus no Zakk Wylde or Yngwie (I feel they are the weakest links in DS solo stuff).

Steve Stevens is a great guitarist. Flamenco a Go Go is another album worth checking out.. And his last album, Memory Crash is great too.
