I don't think he said the venue smelled like it, but there were manure farms nearby. Or I could be totally wrong. That's a viable option.

Well, he could smell it at the venue, thus the venue smelled like it.  Of course, the venue itself wasn't (hopefully) the origin of the smell, as he said the farms nearby were the cause.

EDIT:  I had many typos, as apparently I can't spell.
