What does Spotify hold over other websites like Groovershark or Pandora (not saying they are truly comparable, I just don't know about Spotify)?

I could check wikipedia too, but I think it's better to hear testimonies of people who've actually used it.

It's basically like grooveshark, except the albums are actually tagged and organized properly and the service doesn't run like shit.

Just when Spotify started sucking then.

Actually, I'm pretty sure the reason they changed the licensing policy was so that they could carry it over to the US :lol

It's still super useful for checking out music though.

it scrobbles.

Seriously though, it's not THAT much different, but it's really user-friendly.

It's much more user-friendly than either of those other two, as Ian said it's properly tagged and arranged.

It also only includes music that they have licences for, unlike Grooveshark who let people upload things and then look at whether they have licences, so it's less questionable legally.

It's also a higher quality of sound than on Grooveshark, although I haven't heard Pandora.

Just when Spotify started sucking then.

Mine is also amazing. Since I got the unlimited thingie (5 euro) I have barely used winamp and I think I listened to about 100 new artists in 3 weeks because it's really easy to get playlists or new music.

Grooveshark scrobbles too, you just have to install something for it.

I don't know how it's going to work at first in the US. In Europe the free version now has a limit to how much you can listen to per month, and adverts obviously. Then there's Unlimited which is £5 a month (in the UK) which has no ads and unlimited listening, and then there's Premium at £10 a month which gives you higher quality streams, the ability to sync up to your phone/iPod, and I think a couple of other bonus features that are not hugely exciting.

I'll dig this post back:

Meh, I pay for the full premium version. Totally worth it, especially as I can sync it up to my iPod. And ultimately it means that if I keep listening to something on there, a bit of my money ends up going to the band/label. :)

Although when I find things I really really like, I buy them eventually anyway.

That's how I work too... but Spotify has had a problem for more than 6 months of a lot of 10 min+ tracks being removed, and it's because of a licensing problem they have. Otherwise I'd definitely pay for Unlimited...

That basically has restricted me from being able to check out Mike Oldfield.. lol
xcept I do have unlimited now. Cuz it's not that free anymore.

Well, for many reasons.
Apart from that though, I really have no use for Spotify or similar programs whatsoever.

Ah ok, yeah. Well that's been the case for a while now and so far there has only been one album that I wanted to listen to but there was a 10+ minute track unavailable, and that was the new Explosions in the Sky. Everything else has either not had 10+ minute tracks, or they've been fully available. And I have listened to a serious amount of stuff on there over the last 6 months.

I got in too. Doesn't look like something I'll be using instead of a media player but it looks like an excellent tool for trying out new bands.
Cole: "Ow I just got hit in the balls"
Me: "How?"
Cole: "Well you know when you try to scratch your balls, and you scratch too hard?
I'll admit sometimes I want to listen to Dragonforce.

no Pandora in Canada.
Sniff.

I discovered a good dozen of my current favs from Pandora.
Take care everyone - Bet you all didn't even notice I was gone.

Spotify is awesome. Since I got unlimited I only use winamp on the rare occasions that spotify doesn't have the music I'm specifically looking for.

Also, nice site with playlists and stuff:

Let me guess. 256 kbps variable bit rate? Unless they offer flac or other lossless formats I'm not interested. Lossy is the big ripoff of the music world. Sorry for this little rant.  ;)

EDIT: Didn't know it was a free service. Disregard the above.  ;)

Also, I got an invite, but it would appear that I didn't actually need one since I just logged in with my old account, so if anyone wants to give it a go say so and I'll PM you the link.

If more than one of you want it, please fight to the death for my entertainment.
