So with my ears still ringing, here's a quick review (as promised) to complement my live tweets from yesterday:
Even though you can expect to see DT in small venues in Switzerland, Komplex 457 was something special. Although this "intimate atmosphere" (JLB) allowed for a much more immediate enjoyment of the gig, the venue turned out to be too small to erect the video screens (or leave enough room for Anathema's drummer at the center of the stage for that matter.)
Although they definitely look older now, their performance has only improved. I guess the shock to the system of MP leaving may have indeed been just what they really needed. Not only did they play like they meant it, but they also had fun. Mangini's vibrant happiness really seems to rub off on them.
Speaking of Mangini: What a guy! Not only did he do his limb switching routine during the solo but he also played with grace, elegance and incredible precision throughout the 2 hour gig.
The crowd definitely gave him our part of the "Welcome to the family" sentiment and he was as genuine as we've come to know him, definitely showing his appreciation and sheer joy of being a part of all that Dream Theater represents.
I very much enjoyed seeing the guys "having it" and whipping Swiss fans into an uncharacteristically loud frenzy.
On a side note, there was a VIP area with what I suspect some special guests. Unless I'm mistaken, Frank Solomon was there (enjoying the gig) and possibly even some of the guys' family members.
For the next time (High Voltage on the 24th in my case), I hope they'll at least switch things up a bit beyond simply cutting the set short.
