Computer won't boot up. HALP!
« on: July 05, 2011, 05:15:51 AM »
So, today as I was trying to get onto my computer, it just wouldn't boot up (it was running just fine 4 or so hours beforehand). I've done a bit of reading, and am still unsure what the problem could be. It acts normally up until after the initial start up. Then it just sits there, black screen and nothing more (not a moniter problem, I've alread confirmed that).

I haven't messed with the thing since I discovered it wasn't working this afternoon, seeing how I leave to go on vacation in like...an hour or so. Has anyone here dealt with this problem before or at least know what I should check out after I get home in 13 days? Any help would be most appreciated.

Fake edit: Also apparently a friend of mine said it might be my motherboard, which frightens me.
I felt its length in quite a few places.

Try to boot from your install cd.

When you say it "Acts normally until after the initial start up", does that mean you are getting the BIOS but Windows isn't booting?

If this is the case, your windows boot file is probably corrupt. You may have to reformat your hard drive.

So yeah, try this:
Try to boot from your install cd.

Orion....that's the one with a bunch of power chords and boringly harsh vocals, isn't it?

My parents' PC had a similar problem, and the cause of it turned out to be a virus. Better get it checked to be sure (when you have the time).
... And you ask me: "Where's my hairspray?"

Try unplugging any unnecessary USB devices. I know my computer doesn't like to always boot up properly when I have one of my USB HDDs plugged in.

It's not very likely to fix it but worth a try.

Google the brand and model number and find out if there is a restore sequence of keys to be pressed. (besides the obvious f5 or F12 to get and change the boot order so you can wipe the drive with an install disc)

I've had a couple laptops or desktops that had back up/restore partitions you just had to press and hold volume up while it booted and press "0" twice or some such shit.

Take care everyone - Bet you all didn't even notice I was gone.

Happy Lives to you all.
