  • You're just another hero riding through the night
Ode to Joy, Für Elise and Eine kleine Nachtmusik would be up there
on par with the anguish one would have from getting unconsensually bent over and buttloved.

Hmm, I dunno man, they're kids. I don't have a problem with little kids listening to Bieber, that's what he's there for, and frankly I listened to some shitty stuff when I was young too. But, I also had The Beatles playing in my parents car all the time when I was young. While I couldn't fully appreciate it back then, because my head was so wrapped up in Big Fun Party Mix 3, when I grew older I could go back and love them all over again.

Plus, kids like what other kids like. Everyone is listening to Bieber right now, just like everyone was listening to The Jonas Brothers two years ago. But, no 8 year old is going to talk to his friends about The Beatles, he's going to talk about stuff he knows the other kids know about. But that doesn't mean no kids listen to it, it just means its safer for them to discuss popular modern music rather then music that maybe only they know about among their friends.
Well, all I know is that from sheer observation, a lot more kids are already familiar and fond of Michael Jackson's music, than they are of The Beatles. Maybe it's different in various parts of North America, I suppose, but here at least, MJ trumps the Beatles in terms of sheer popularity among the modern 8 - 14 year olds.

When I have kids, they're only listening to MY music, hahah.

Well I could easily say that I know by memory DT songs which I play every day:

Pull Me Under
Another Day
Surrounded
Erotomania
The Mirror
Lie
You Not Me
Peruvian Skies
As I Am
The Root Of All Evil
The Answer Lies Within
These Walls
I Walk Beside You
Panic Attack
Never Enough
Sacrified Sons
Forsaken
The Ministry Of Lost Souls
A Nightmare To Remember
A Rite Of Passage
Wither
The Shattered Fortress
The Count Of Tuscany

I also know Perfect Strangers album very well, Helloween discography and of course DT discography... I know a lot of music by memory ;) so long to write  :D

Hmm...not sure if you understood the question...

Now I read it once again, read again thread title and I get it ;) I was thinking "what piece of music do you know the best from all around the globe?"  ::) So, I think hm....
Not easy if you thought of it for a while, but what first came into my mind it's for sure Smoke On The Water riff, theme from Star Wars may be here too... strings from The Final Countdown I think also  ;)

I'm surprised about the lack of classical music in this thread.

Brahms's lullaby.
Strauss's Blue Danube.
Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture.
Bach's (although disputed) Toccata and Fugue in D minor.
Händel's Hallelujah chorus from the Messiah.
Bizet's Toreador song.
Fucik's Entry Of The Gladiators.
Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata 1st movement.
Grieg's In The Hall Of The Mountain King from the Peer Gynt suite.
Orff's O Fortuna from Carmina Burana.
Strauss's Also Sprach Zarathustra.
Tchaikovsky's Dance Of The Sugar-Plum Fairy.
Wagner's Ride Of The Valkyries.
Chopin's Funeral March from Sonata no. 2.
Bizet's Habanera from Carmen.

And many more.

Or a national anthem, American probably.
Dude what? I have no idea what the American national Anthem is.

This. The American anthem really isn't that well known in other countries.

Oh well, I dunno. I figure the rest of the world was like Canada, in the same sense that everything American is shoved down our throats.

As big as MJ and the Beatles are, I think some of that classical music listed above has both artists beat when it comes to EVERYONE in the world being familiar with the music.

I'd say either Money or Another Brick in the Wall pt 2 are very well known all around the world.

Agreed that it probably is Happy Birthday. I definitely don't think it's one of these Michael Jackson songs though. They are mega famous and Michael Jackson is hugely famous as an artist, but I don't think any of the songs posted by him would make the top few of most widely known songs in the world. I've heard them and everything, but there are hundreds of songs that I hear a lot more and that I think people would be more likely to recognise them. The type of songs that are so ubiquitous throughout films, advertising, TV. Perhaps some of the Christmas songs, actually; although I know Christmas isn't universally celebrated, it is pretty widespread.

I don't thinks it's a classical piece, not enough exposure in rural or uneducated parts of the world is my suspicion and classical does not stick in the memory as easily.  I think I'm going with Happy Birthday at this point.

What about the Wedding March?  Is this primarily a western Europe/N. American thing?

I'm surprised about the lack of classical music in this thread.
Classical music isn't even well known across the Western world unless it's something used across many mediums like advertising or tv shows.  Other parts of the world have their own traditional music to spend their time studying or listening to.  Why do you think European historical music is prominent across many cultures?

I asked my wife about Happy Birthday in China, she guessed almost everyone there know it.

Here Comes the Bride comes to mind, too.  That's also well known to most Western people, and is also apparently very well known in China.  ...so other cultures have apparently adopted this wretchedness.

Which is a classical piece composed by Richard Wagner.

Some of those classical picks are good. For rock music, Stairway to Heaven has to be up there.

I admit that I probably wouldn't even recognize Thriller if I heard it. Michael Jackson is completely off my radar, except for his contributions to the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 soundtrack. :lol

I think we have our definitive answer then.
