Best DT song in years. Bring on the album.
Orion....that's the one with a bunch of power chords and boringly harsh vocals, isn't it?
LOOK AT THIS AWESOME SHIT AHHHHHH

In years? I love the song, I listened to it about 20 times already and It hasn't gotten old yet. I think they have released some really good material on the last couple albums, especially BC&SL. TOT through SC are kind of hit or miss. I like MM a lot and the rest of the band sounds reborn. The only thing bad are the lyrics but I don't recall Dream Theater ever having lyrics that I cared about...Who listens to DT for lyrics  :loser:

I listen to DT's lyrics closely.  These lyrics elevate the song to sublime levels.  can't touch 'em, they're exactly what I was hoping for.

Weird that vocals always reminds me of JLB's Mullmuzzler times.

I am surprised so many are so surprised to hear piano on this tune, considering there is plenty of piano on practically every Rudess-era DT record.

It's more in how it was used. I did get a brief "Blind Faith" flashback, though without as much payoff.

I actually didn't care much for the piano section, it seemed Jordan fell back into his "let's hit as many notes as I can while do descending arps as often as I can".

and it was awesome!!
Of course Dream Theater isn't that good. Good music is obviously about 3 minute pop songs and catchy hooks.
Dream Theater aren't that good. Neither was Beethoven, or Mozart, or Bach. Pfft, 20 minute epics. Who needs that?

But for most of the track he's laying down the atmosphere and not overplaying.
Anyway, it's Jordan Rudess, what did you expect?

I like how well the continuum works in OTBOA, and how every album JR keeps using it to great effect

There's an interesting comment on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oasnbzEMV08

Quote
Did anyone notice that the whole arrangement is completly identical to "Pull me under"?

  • Intro: First acoustic guitar intro, drums start with tom breaks followed by keyboard melody, then the whole band comes in
  • Pre verse: guitar riff, stakkato keyboards, stakkato drumbreak
  • 1. verse + bridge + short instrumental
  • 2. verse + uptempo bridge + short melodic break leading into first chorus
  • 1. chorus
  • Riff with stakkato keys again

It also has five words in it
Pull me under has three letters in it
The difference is two
And ADTOE is five words
And IAW has 3 words
Another difference is two
My rating for OTBOA is 9
My rating of PMU is 7

To be fair the structure is identical to PMU, in more ways that could just be coincidence...

Yes, the elements are different (riffs, melodies, sound, ...) but the structure as outlined by the guy on youtube really seems to apply to both. I know you DTFers are sick with overanalysis and made-up ripoff accusations but just look at this with a fresh mind. Nobody's saying this is a PMU ripoff but I find the structural similarities beyond randomness.

I totally agree that its that same kind of structure. I actually described it earlier as Pull Me Under as written for SDOIT and Elements of Persuasion. LTE is there too.

5th listen and it is getting better and better. I still think that the chorus is a bit too cheesy, but the rest is great, especially the intro. It gives me hope that they might have recovered from the BCSL desaster. 8.5/10

OTBOA has a subtle Pull Me Under vibe when the drums start to enter behind the acoustic and also in the end. It's not a big thing but you should be able to put your finger on it...

This was my feeling.
It sounded like a musical omlet being made. There's just shit thrown in everywhere. Then a quiet section in the middle where they flipped it to let it cook. I'll give it a couple more spins. For now, it's just..."ok".

After 1 day of listening and taking everything in, the biggest strength of this song is that it's inspiration seems to
be DT and not Muse or Metallica or any other band. For the first time in what seems like ages it seems they REALLY
wanted to go back to the drawing board and acheive the sound that drew leigions of us fans in back in 1991.

HUGE kudos to the band.

After a good night sleep I like it even better than before.

The combo of clean guitar and synth in the intro makes a really smooth sound together. When the choir comes in, the mood reminds me a bit of Coheed and Cambria's Welcome Home, actually... Only 1000x more awesome!
Someone's been complaining about JR's excessive playing. I do not agree at all, and I actually love everything he does in this song. The arpeggio patches he uses has that good old LTE sound over them, and it's awesome!
And the verses are really cool! I like how MM plays each of them differently and how JLB sings in them ("Standing on the backs .... OF ANGELS). I'm not hearing enough love for the instrumental part before the bass break, though... :) The part after the guitar solo should have been longer. At least twice as long...
I can understand the mentions of the lack of memorable/catchy vocal lines/chorus. DT/JLB has them all over the place (from the top of my head: One More Time, The Great Debate or Home), and IMO if the chorus in OtBoA was just a tad better, this would be one of the absolute best DT song in many many years. But I'm a sucker for awesome instrumental parts, and this song has them!  :metal

After numerous listens the last two days (and will not listen any more until the album comes out in September), I like the song, but I'm nowhere near "blown away". The song has many good moments but nothing special stands out to me. Yes, it's less "metal" than the last 2 initial singles and a little more "progressive", but where's the "ooomph"? Also, I'm not crazy about JLB's vocals on the song, nor Jordan's constant (and needless) doodling (I'm really starting to believe that he's been a weak link since SC). Anyway, good song and can't wait for the album in September. I just need to be "blown away" again by DT, which really hasn't happened since TOT!

Finally listened to it and I'm not impressed, kinda indifferent to the song. As others have said, the song is pretty forgettable overall. I'd give it a 5/10. Some points:

1. Those comments about them being more proggy and less metal made me curious, but after listening to the song I say it's just wishful thinking. The song is heavy in the same way many recent DT songs are. Listen to the sections beginning at 1:54, 2:38, 4:24. That is recent DT at its fullest expression. The guitar tooooooone and work, the orchestration, the layering of the instruments, everything is a revisit to Constant Motion or AROP.

2. By the way, Constant Motion and AROP were better. At least, they had memorable moments (the main riff, the extremelly cool guitar work during the second verse and the guitar solo in AROP, the transition to the instrumental section in Constant Motion were excellent) but here we have nothing. Those singles were energetic, this song has no energy. The riffs are not catchy and the vocal melodies are extremely bland, especially during the chorus where even the music is lackluster.  No fun, no excitement, nothing you can sing along to.

3. Jordan shines in this song, his parts were my favorite. The other guys seemed to play just because they had to write a song, "so let's play something here", but sound very uninspired, especially James.

4. It's good to hear JM again. It would have been better if he played at least 1 interesting bassline in the whole song.

5. The drums are Ok, I don't think they're mixed too low, but the kick bass is too prominent IMO.

6. The outro is very good.

And yes, I hope it'll grow on me  :)
