Listen with a open mind is all I can say. I'm excited for this new, non-Portnoy, chapter in DT history.
Thanks,
Dave

The song could have been mastered today and released today.  It's not very hard to upload something to youtube.  Doesn't really take much effort.

Yes, if Dream Theater was an unknown band on some random tiny label that might be how it's done. But they're not and this is RoadRunner, things are done with a little more preparation, or at least I'd hope they are.

What I'm saying is, there is no need for preparation. The mastering was probably done to schedule.  Finish album on today's date, release the single the following day.  It's not like mastering is a floating time frame.  They book that session and get it done on time and on budget.

All it takes from finish of master to youtube is export file, upload to youtube.  I'm sure that idea was conceived before the song was even mastered.

I'm not sure how effective that would be, but maybe the idea was exactly to cause this sort of hype. They give us a short time to get excited about it, which in the end leads to our telling everyone we meet for 24 hours about how much we are looking forward to it...

I'm very interested, because...

-DT's singles are usually among the poorest of the album.

on the other hand...

-DT's opening tracks are usually among the best of the album.

It seems like the chances of this song being good is 50/50.

You read my mind :omg:

Oh yeah, I did notice that.  I was just listening to A Rite of Passage yesterday and I kept thinking how flat and uninspired it sounded.

it will be an intro song of 1 min

That'd be the biggest letdown ever. Can you imagine getting all hyped up and being served with a song like Regression? :lol

It would be somewhat disappointing, but if that means this will be another concept album, I'm more than OK with that.

P.S. Is there a way to quote multiple people in one single comment? Sorry for my forum ignorance...

Yeah I hope that I could hear it when I'll be back... word stream misleads me...

Hmm, not a hundred percent sure about this, but "stream" is what one does with youtube videos or myspace songs. The term stands kind of in opposition to download, where the file is saved in your computer.

I feel like I'm the only one who doesn't dislike A Rite of Passage. It's not great or anything close to that, but it's not terrible.

Cannot wait for tomorrow, though, ahhhh.

A Rite of Passage might be my least liked song from BC&SL, but that doesn't mean I dislike it. I like it quite a lot really (yeah, I'm one of those freaks who love BC&SL...)

AROP is my least favorite on BC&SL. It sounds really uninspired and to be honest the only thing I appreciate of the song is the Guitar solo. Good stuff.

ARoP took a long time for me to grow into, but now I like it a lot.

Oh, and anyone else from the UK know what time it'll be? I have googled, but the confusion lies in our daylight saving time...

Best part of AROp is the second verse. Everything, the vocal melodies, music underneath...not the lyrics though, obviously.

ARoP is fine.  It's not great, but it's not half as bad as people seem to think.  It's significantly better than TBOT, at least.

TBOT > AROP for me. It starts of strong and kinda falls down a bit in the middle, but the end makes up for it, to me. The build to the solo is what I look forward to, though I know people generally think the vocal sections are bland (and I somewhat agree).

I seriously can't understand why so many people hate TBOT. I mean yes, the lyrics are awful, but musically I think it's one of their better songs of the past like 4 albums.

lots will probably say "because it's cheesy lol!" but that's really not a way to discuss the song's music. I, too, consider it's a beautiful song musically. Petrucci's ending solo is one of his best, for sure.

By the way, I agree with Adami, the music is superb. It's the vocal melodies, or something. To me, it's not the ideal key scale (hope I am saying that right) or range for JLB to sing the song in. He sounds too restrained/lazy, where it could have had more energy.

You have one point with JLB's register. I mean, it was originally sung my Portnoy, who doesn't have the widest of vocal ranges, and thought "hey, you could sing it up an octave in the chorus!". Either way, I find JLB's performance to be quite good in the second half of the song.

I know that it was tuned for Portnoy, but they could've shifted it for JLB, no? JLB does well enough for what he has room to work with, but you can tell that there is a limitation. I do agree that the second half ("fleeting wings of time" and after) is better, but only because it is softer and more appropriate.

Wonder if MP is going to listen at 11 tomorrow

It's been stated many times that MP is the biggest Dream Theater fan, so even after his departure i think he'll be curious enough to check out the song tomorrow, even if it stings a little.  How could he resist?

Also, I assume that since the DT plane is going one direction, I think whatever is tied to the rope is a symbolic representation of something going in the opposite direction, hence the title.
