But "tops of all time" lists are usually pretty shit.  They tend to rate team success higher than individual success, and focus on longevity rather than peak.

Lindros was one of the best players of the 90s, and the early Dead Puck era.  He deserves to get into the Hall.

Team success? It is a team sport.. But goals, assists, points, games played, playoff points... are all pretty high for me on HoF requirements (for a forward). Lindros should not get in for what he could have been like Ytse says.

What?  Lindros won the Hart and the Pearson, was an All-Star 7 of the 9 seasons where he played more than 50 games, and still managed 1.14 PPG (Neely: 0.96 PPG, Nieuwendyk: 0.90 PPG) despite playing mostly in the Dead Puck era and with several unproductive seasons due to injury.

Lindros was a better player than Nieuwendyk or Neely.  There's no question.  There's no need to invoke "what ifs?"  Sure, he might've been amongst Lemieux or Gretzky if he hadn't been derailed by injuries.  But as it stands, he was without question one of the best players in the league for most of his career.  Nieuwendyk can't claim that.

I'm not comparing to any other players in the HoF, in my mind Lindros does not qualify on his own merit.

I can't think of any better merit than being one of the best players at your position in the world for most of your career.

And thats where we disagree, because I don't think he was one of the best players at that position for most of his career.

Fun fact: in Nieuwendyk's highest scoring season, 1989-90, he was the 10th highest scoring center in the league, behind Ron Francis, Pierre Turgeon, Pat Lafontaine, Joe Sakic, Adam Oates, Mark Messier, Steve Yzerman, Mario Lemieux, and Wayne Gretzky.

Belfour for his win total, definately.

Howe? I just don't think he meets the standard with the injuries. You get closer if you include the WHA, but I think it's still no.

I'm not sure I'd put Killer in. I know he was DOMINANT (with a capital D) for about 4 years in the playoffs in one of the hockey capitals of the world and had an above average and very productive career.

I guess he'd be pretty close to my bubble. Which is why I think Lindros should not get in because I don't think there is a spot for potential in the Hockey Hall of Fame. Those are great points GuineaPig and I may have a Lindros bias, but I'm still not quite convinced.

As an Islanders fan, I'm still shaking my head as to how Clark Gillies got in. I think the world of the guy and he was a VERY important piece of the team, but we are talking about the Hockey Hall of Fame here. If injuries didn't shorten his career maybe we could have a conversation but....Neely too I guess.

I'm definately on the conservative side when it comes to the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Capitals get Vokoun for 1 year, $1.5 million.

Best free agent signing of the last couple years, probably. Best goalie of the past 5 years, and they get him for a quarter of Bryzgalov, and for eight years less.

Nick, If I were you, I'd be damned impressed.

They may not get it done this year, but you have at least 5 years of SERIOUS contention here. (And I'm ignoring Jagr. He's only there to hold the fort until the kids are ready.)

If the Islanders don't move to Quebec in 4 years, I look very foward to meeting this forimable challenge.

And you left off Sean Couturier from your list...You may not know who he is now, but you will, Nick....you will.

He would be the 1st round pick in the got section, he's there, just not in name.

That is fucking insane. I would have preferred Vokoun to Bryz, and I simply can't believe Vokoun signed with anyone for 1.5 million, that's fucking nuts. My only guess is that he wants to win a cup, and he sees the Capitals as his best chance this year.

I've never seen such a different team in one year Nick for a team that makes the playoffs quite a bit.  It's unreal the change the team is going through.

I dont like Phillys changes because they werent that far removed from the final. Consider The Ducks losing, missing the playoffs with largely the same core, coming back the following year and getting it done.

You don't mess with success.

Well, we had certain issues, shipping Carter off to get some draft picks back to sign the star goalie we needed was certainly a good decision, especially since we had too much depth at center. However any further trades should have focused on getting us a good young defenseman, someone to take the place of Pronger and Timonen since those guys are both getting ancient. All these trades later our young offense has just gotten younger and our old defense is not any younger. And I realize we have Carle and Cobourn, but understand our top 3 defensemen are all in their 30's, and our top 2 are in their very late 30's.

These morons actually thought they could schedule a hockey game outdoors in late-September in TEXAS?????

Damned Bettman evangelism continues to spiral out of control.

HOUSTON - An NHL exhibition game between the Phoenix Coyotes and Dallas Stars scheduled to be played in Reliant Stadium on Sept. 23 has been cancelled.

Stars spokesman Rob Scichili says the game was called off because of the cost of putting ice in the stadium, the home of the NFL's Houston Texans. Scichili says the game will not be rescheduled.

Ramon Alvarez, a spokesman for Fox Sports Southwest, said the network is trying to "extend the Stars' fan base into Houston," since more of their games will be televised in the market in the near future.

A new regional sports network will begin airing Houston Rockets games in 2012 and Astros games in 2013, freeing air time for more Stars game on the current Fox Sports station in the city.
