Machine Head - New song "Locust"
« on: June 15, 2011, 05:46:16 PM »
Just listened to the new song and i must say im pretty blown away.

I bought MH's first album Burn my eyes way back when and after a couple of realeases i wrote them off during their nu-metal phase but i must say, the quality of their new material such as the masterpiece 'The Blackening' puts bands like metallica currently to shame.

Now im sure they aren't eveyone's taste, but would like to hear the rest of the forums opinion of the new song 'Locust' (its on youtube on official RoadRunner page)? I like Rob Flynn's new singing style too, suits the song.

Great song, but the sound and production turn me somewhat off. The Blackening and TTAOE had some amazing production, but in this case... I don't know, it may sound more raw but that's not always a good thing. Specially if the drums sound as bad as they do in this case.

If it had a better sound it would have blown my mind. The song itself kicks ass, but leaves me worried about the production of the album. Then again it says "Advance Mix" on the cover, so it might not be the final version.

I really dig the song. Heavy as balls, but still an insanely catchy chorus, without giving up the heavy. My one complaint is sometimes melodic breakdowns work, and sometimes they don't. I do not dig the one in this song. That being said, the song is easily an 8.5, and Machine Head's new album is tied for me as being the most anticipated album of the year. :metal

I'm a former big fan, and I could probably still enjoy the Blackening, but this new song is really painfully dull.  I'll probably listen to the new album, but I hope it doesn't sound like this.

Never heard of the band

Really?  They are an extremely popular band in the ninties and their last album proved quite successful.

Haven't listened to the song yet but I'm a big fan aswell.  The Blackening was a pretty good return to form.  Burn My Eyes and The More Things Change are just amazing.
Everyone else, except Wolfking is wrong.

i spun the fuck outta the blackening over the course of a couple years. but in the past two years or more, i've only ever reached for it a couple times. and when i did, it felt like it hadnt aged as awesomely as i hoped. maybe i just wore my copy out.

anywayz, i just spun the new song 4 times in a row  :metal
all of a sudden there's a new contender for most anticipated album the rest of the year (well, maybe not quite, but it's way up near the top all of a sudden)

Just listened to it for the first time, didn't do much for me to be honest.  I'll give it some more spins though.  Musically it's good, but the melodies didn't really hit more, it sounds like a grower though, much like The Blackening.  Not too sure on Rob's vocal style here, really sounds nothing like him.

I have been playing it for a few days now non stop and love it! Melodies took me playing it on max in the car with surround on to appreciate how badass it is....or the fact that there has been crap after crap of releases this year and we are only starting to get to the good stuff!  The Blackening took me a year to see what the hype was about but now i understand it completely!

Rob's vocals sound new and fresh IMO and im glad he changed it up a bit.  He probably quit smoking or someting, i have noticed that in a few bands when the singer quits the vocals change (smoking that is!  ;))

Glad ill be seeing this band at soundwave in September here in Australia!

It's true. They released one of the most brutal metal records of the 90's, followed by 3 mediocre to god awful albums, then they sort of kicked it into gear with Through the Ashes of Empires...and then they released one of the best metal albums of the 2000's in The Blackening.

So, I've been listening to Unto the Locust since Friday.

Despite what the band has said to the contrary, the album is The Blackening 2, but who cares!?!?!? It's pretty badass. I have not given it enough time to really get a massive grip on the whole thing.  I'm on my third listen now. From right now, all I can say is that it is a kickass album and Darkness Within has the ability to become my favorite Machine Head song.

I listened to a few of the songs. Very early thoughts: It sounds good, but not all that great. Quite by the numbers, bar a few little touches. The songs are lacking something to really elevate them to the greatness of the last few albums. Locust, for example, which I've now played four or five times, is a perfectly fine song, there are no big problems, but just feels a bit flat and unspectacular and typical for MH.

The Blackening has really horrible production. The guitars were fizzy as hell. Very nearly as compressed as Death Magnetic.   :tdwn

Also, Robb's voice really does not do it for me   :(

You know what, I came here to post this. Pretty much word for word. Wow lol.

Gonna give TTAOE a spin tonight now though :metal
I punch those numbers into my calculator and they make a happy face.

Apart from the horrendous production... Guitars are super-saturated fizz.

This new album really does sound exactly the same as The Blackening, not sure what I think of it yet.

On my first full listen through now, and I'll stand by my initial thoughts.

Quite by the numbers, bar a few little touches. The songs are lacking something to really elevate them to the greatness of the last few albums. Having said that, it is still very good. It just doesn't have the sort of impact either TTAOE did (because it was their first after Supercharger and such a return to form), or the Blackening did (because it took their music to another whole level). This album is just a holding pattern after those two, but it's still modern Machine Head, i.e. still great.
