No, it could never beat Awake, Images and Words, SFAM and Six Degrees....so that would make it my 5th favorite

It's my favorite album as it is - many of my very favorite songs (Hell's Kitchen, Lines in the Sand, Trial of Tears, Hollow Years, Just Let Me Breathe...), best production/sound by far, no pointless wankery, well rounded/mature compositions thanks to the serious pre-production work that was done beforehand, etc.

My ideal Falling into infinity would be my 4th favorite Dream Theater album, so that's quite a difference.

2. Raise the Knife
3. Peruvian Skies
4. Hollow Years
5. Hell's Kitchen
6. Lines in the Sand
7. Speak to Me
8. Trial of Tears

I've never actually tried that tracklisting before.  I just might have to give it a listen.

But I don't think my ideal FII would be able to top Images or 6DoiT.

2) Hollow Years
3) Hell's Kitchen
4) Lines in the Sand
5) Speak to Me
6) New Millennium
7) Trial of Tears

Nah. It'd definitely be a substantial improvement though.

FII as is ranks as my #5 DT album (behind I&W/SFAM (tied), Awake, & SDOIT) and I love it as is, but my ideal track list adds You Or Me, Raise The Knife, Lines In The Sand (Demo), Cover My Eyes, and ACOS as bonus tracks, and keeps the rest of the album as it is.

So I guess my answer is......no...?

Not a chance.

Unless 'my ideal FII' is allowed to include ACOS and half of I&W.  :P

This version of FII would place it 11th on my list.  I'm going to go out on a limb and guarantee I'll like ADTOE more.

The OP doesn't intend for you to use his specific FII tracklisting. There have been threads around before that asked people what their "ideal" tracklisting for the album would be, allowing them to exclude songs they didn't like and/or replace songs with some of the B-sides from the writing sessions.

My ideal tracklisting would make FII jump up a few places, but it still couldn't beat my favourite two albums.

1.- Raise the Knife
2.- Cover My Eyes
3.- Hollow Years
4.- Peruvian Skies
5.- The Way It Used To Be
5.- Hell's Kitchen
6.- Lines In The Sand
7.- Speak To Me
8.- New Millenium
9.- Trial Of Tears

It would be very long but i think it's just under 80 minutes and I left out 3 songs I like (Where Are You Now, Just Let Me Breathe and Anna Lee)

FII sits at my 4 spot now, so I think it would move up a notch and beat 6DOIT and maybe even sit at number 2 beating I&W.
I imagined the story to go more like this.

I was sitting a traffic light blaring Space Dye Vest and next to me in another car was Kevin Moore. And I'll never be open again.

1. New Millenium
2. Raise the Knife
3. Cover My Eyes
4. Peruvian Skies
5. Burning My Soul
6. Hell's Kitchen
7. Lines in the Sand
8. Hollow Years
9. Trial of Tears

With this tracklisting, it would be. But since the tracklisting on the FII that was released sucks, I'll stick with Awake.

I think so.  My ideal version would be very similar to MP's ideal version, ie a double album including all of the material they wrote for it, with the song arrangements being very close to the demo versions.  The FII Demos set would fit the bill if the tracklist were rearranged.

3-Hollow Years (Live at Budokan)
4-Hollow Years
5-Hollow Years (Live at Budokan)
6-Hollow Years
7-Hollow Years (Live at Budokan)
8-Hollow Years
9-Hollow Years (Live at Budokan)

...I just love Hollow Years. I end up singing it to myself in exams.

ACOS?  That was never considered for inclusion on FII.

Of course, but he said ‘our ideal FII,’ he didn’t qualify it in any way, or restrict it to what was possible at the time.

FII is my bottom-ranked album, so nothing would bump it up to the middle of the pack, let alone the top.

Why during exams?

Because it soothes my nerves. Plus it's one of those songs that inspire me, very useful in English exams when you have to write a descriptive piece.
