Even though I'm not gay it really bothers me when people use the word gay as a negative term.

Even though I'm not gay it really bothers me when people use the word gay as a negative term.

When I was little it didn't bother me. When I began to have strong politically correct attitudes toward race/sex/orientation/etc. in my early teens I was bothered by it. When I came to realize that the word had existed for about 90% its history not meaning "homosexual" but rather "happy" I became annoyed that anyone would take issue with it. My reason for saying this is pretty simple.

Imagine if the "preferred" term for the mentally challenged became "goofy" and then after a few decades of "goofy" meaning both its traditional definition and the new context for referring to mentally challenged folks there suddenly was some crusade to solely use "goofy" for ironically the context its been used for a shorter period of time than any other meaning.

I don't think it'd be cool calling them "goofy" but I figured it was similar to the absurdity of calling someone a synonym for "happy" regardless of their temperament as is the case with gay.

Also, if the meaning of "gay" has suddenly been reserved for formally referring to a homosexual then it seems hypocritical for folks to just expect the word to "evolve" into its current usage but have a problem with it "evolving" into use in another context especially when its use in the homosexual context only accounts for less than 10% of the time it's been established as a word.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gay#Overview

Quote

The word "gay" arrived in English during the 12th century from Old French gai, most likely deriving ultimately from a Germanic source.[1] For most of its life in English, the word's primary meaning was "joyful", "carefree", "bright and showy", and the word was very commonly used with this meaning in speech and literature. For example, the optimistic 1890s are still often referred to as the Gay Nineties. The title of the 1938 French ballet Gaîté Parisienne ("Parisian Gaiety"), which became the 1941 Warner Brothers movie, The Gay Parisian,[6] also illustrates this connotation. It was apparently not until the 20th century that the word began to be used to mean specifically "homosexual", although it had earlier acquired sexual connotations.

I'm going to ruffle some feathers here, but I don't see any issue with saying something is 'gay' because you don't like it.  I'm really not sure what the big deal is, I think people really just need to lighten up...then again, I'm a very laid back person by nature.

Just curious, but was it the Infamous 2 commercial where you heard "epic"?
I'd like to see "epic", "n00b", and "fail" get retired.

It's fucking stupid and it sounds stupid too.

Hey check out the new Dream Theater video.

"That's gay".

Really? So where at in the video are the musicians sucking each other off and fucking each other because I don't see any gayness going on.

...

Exactly, shut the fuck up.

What if the person who made the comment was one of those irritating people who believe progressive metal and related genres are just "musical masterbation"?

Actually, I'll have to defend the use of the word, "gay," at least as far as I use it.  I don't have any hatred for gay people, nor am I a homophobe, but it's a term I use with my friends.  I think given that we all know the context, in that it's not mean-spirited at all, it's just a bit humor.  Hell, I use it with my gay friends as well and they're more than fine with it.  It really all depends on context and if the other party involved knows your intent.

As far as words I don't like, "fucktard" and "biffle" are up there.

Sick as a synonym for cool or great.  Not too many expressions really annoy me, but that one does every time I hear it.
Argument, the presentation of reasonable views, never makes headway against conviction, and conviction takes no part in argument because it knows.

It may have something to do with my slight southern accent, like when I say to someone "How are you?" it sounds more like "How are ya?" naturally.

It really sounds like "yuh" but "ya" is very close to it in my head.

Take care everyone - Bet you all didn't even notice I was gone.

Awesome

should be reserved for something that truly inspires awe, that even perhaps made a few tears well up in your eyes

nowdays dropping your phone and it not breaking is considered "awesome". oh well

this is awesome

Guesstimate. It is either a guess, or an estimate. It is not both.

I would also like people (and by people I mean idiots in the news biz) to stop using the suffix ‘–gate’ for anything remotely resembling a scandal.
