1. On the Backs of Angels - Petrucci
2. Build Me Up, Break Me Down - LaBrie
3. Lost Not Forgotten - Petrucci
4. This is the Life - LaBrie
5. The Shaman’s Trance - Instrumental or Petrucci
6. Outcry - LaBrie
7. Far From Heaven - Petrucci
8. Breaking All Illusions - Myung
9. Beneath The Surface - Petrucci & Myung

I didn't think of it until the very end of this post, but I wonder if two or three guys collaborated on the lyrics to some of these?  When was the last time they did that?

Octavarium! Written by John Petrucci, Mike Portnoy and James LaBrie.

Unless you count only count completely split-down-the-middle collaborations as opposed to those sectioned off, in which case... probably Caught in a Web? Perhaps You Not Me, if you count Desmond Child as a collaborator.

Build Me Up, Break Me Down will be a Petrucci song about writing a song called Build Me Up, Break Me Down, which features a slow build-up through three verses and then an epic breakdown.  Sadly, the actual song will be nothing like that.

"And the peculiar thing is this my friend... the song we sang on that fateful night, it didn't actually sound anything like this song!  This is just a tribute!"

I approve.  =D

Exactly what I was thinking of.   :lol

That's right, and of course Take the Time.  That's all I got.

Although it doesn't have official "movements", I'm pretty sure Take the Time was written similarly to Octavarium - each band member at the time (except for JLB) wrote one of the verses. The chorus was probably actually collaborative though.

1. On the Backs of Angels - Petrucci
2. Build Me Up, Break Me Down - LaBrie
3. Lost Not Forgotten- Petrucci
4. This is the Life- LaBrie
5. The Shaman’s Trance- Petrucci (there's no way this is going to be an instrumental.  C'mon now!)
6. Outcry- LaBrie
7. Far From Heaven- Petrucci
8. Breaking All Illusions - Myung
9. Beneath The Surface- Petrucci

Though realistically, Petrucci probably wrote a majority of this album, and James and JM probably got one song each.  But if LaBrie did write any of them, it would be the Static Imulsy-titles like "Build Me Up, Break Me Down" or "Outcry."

Yeah, JLB has a tendency to stick to single-word song titles.

No, I think it's more because it's a lot more difficult to speculate on something like that so most people don't care enough.

There seems to be consensus that Breaking All Illusions will be written by Myung. I agree ;D Apart from that, On The Backs Of Angels and Lost Not Forgotten could've been written by Myung. I'm hoping he hasn't written This Is The Life because it's the name of a song by Miley Cyrus

He's probably thinking of the solo albums. I can't remember which are Matt Guillory and which are LaBrie, but on the last two, you've got... Crucify, Alone, Freaks, Lost, Invisible, Undecided, Smashed, Pretender, Oblivious, Drained, Mislead, Euphoric, and Superstar. He likes the one-worders.

Beneath the Surface sounds like a LtL/ToT kinda song, that probably features JM's lyrics.

Watch it be 4 LaBrie's, 2 Myungs, 2 Petruccis, 1 Rudess
Damn I hope this was the case, I'd love having an album with mostly LaBrie-lyrics and FINALLY a song with lyrics by Jordan.

I'm also sticking with James writing the more modern/human relations-stuff, and JP the more fictional and superstitious stuff.
I guess JM also will contribute with something now that MP won't be writing any.

1. On the Backs of Angels - LaBrie
2. Build Me Up, Break Me Down - LaBrie
3. Lost Not Forgotten - Petrucci
4. This is the Life -  LaBrie
5. The Shaman’s Trance - Petrucci
6. Outcry - Petrucci
7. Far From Heaven - Myung
8. Breaking All Illusions - Petrucci
9. Beneath The Surface - Petrucci

Also was a bit tempting to write RUDESS on one of them. It would certainly be nice to hear what he was capable of lyrically as well. But maybe there's a reason he hasn't written any yet?

Based on his lyrics from Listen, I'd be totally fine with his never contributing any lyrics to DT.  I love Jordan, but that album was a bit painful lyrically.

The first movement is going to be about protein shakes (build me up), then the subject matter of the second movement (break me down) is going to be fat burners.
