lol your opinion =/= fact. Some people enjoy screaming in certain bands. Deal with it.

and save the condescending 'kids these days" argument

Kids these days...

j/k  I'm not familiar with too much of their music, but with what I've heard, the screaming didn't bother me.
Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

Way to miss the point. Tell me, is tuneless screaming now the standard for good vocals? The way you kids talk it sounds like that's the case.   :|

Short answer is Yes. I wish it weren't so, but there's almost no good music without screams coming out anymore. At least not from any new metal artists.
Really? I've heard plenty.

But harsh vocals are just as valid as clean singing.

Ariich is a freak, or somehow has more hours in the day than everyone else.
I be am boner inducing.

Meh, I hesitate to say that they suck (becuz opinions n such) but... they suck.

I am not a fan of the djenty-guitar mixed with shit metalcore-style vocals. Harsh vocals are great, as long as they're good. Unfortunately, Spencer's are not good and I don't care for his clean singing either.

I like Periphery. I was obsessed with them earlier this year. Saw them here in Melbourne last month and they were terrible live. The singer couldn't keep up and couldn't sing in tune.

Can people in this thread not acknowledge that harsh vocals are a valid form of expression for singers as well? Just because they are a bit more abrasive than you're used to doesn't mean you have to lambaste it with ill-founded arguments. I for one am happy that Periphery is getting a chance to open for Dream Theater, as they are one of their very obvious influences. You can also bet your ass I'm taking that 3 hour bus ride to see the show in NY as well.

I think they fit perfectly cause i believe that djent is the new face of prog metal! So these concerts are gonna be like a meeting,a marriage of past and present prog metal!Periphery and all those djent bands really grew up listening to bands like DT and Meshuggah so i guess its kinda like a dream come true for them to open for their heroes! Its great for us to being able to watch the history of prog metal in front of our eyes in those concerts! How it started in the late 80s and how prog is played nowadays with Periphery who are considered to be the pioneers of djent!

He has improved a hell of a lot recently. Like I said, he was beyond amazing when I saw them, and I hope he is again for this tour.
I only like ablums that I can xanascholithoun.

Thanks for sharing. The music is excellent. (like i always think). I love the tone of the vocals. But the vocal melody writing is truly crap especially in the first few minutes. It gets better as the music goes along. I can understand (guys you can call others un-educated but I prefer we have a more civil conversation here) why someone compares this to screamo. The pop like melody just sucks i will have to say. The music gets so much better past the 5 min mark. I don't hate harsh vocals, but I prefer the singing.

Just my 2 cents.

I completely agree.

But that doesn't mean people have to ENJOY that form of expression.
Sincerely,

They are I agree, it's just that the vocals in Periphery are just not that good.

I like Opeth, Death, Between the Buried and Me and Gojira, amongst other harsh vocal-utilizing bands, but I just don't like Periphery. Is that okay?

Of course, I'm not saying you "have" to enjoy it I was just taken aback by the somewhat overall negative reception of Periphery in this thread. Different strokes, different folks I guess.

Periphery do have some very skilled band members. Matt is extremely knowledgeable. A friend of mine went to his drumming workshop at Sonisphere and was blown away by the amount of technicalities he knew and practiced regularly to put in the music.
