I'm going to finish this, actually. Nevermind that whole part about me quitting. I'm going to be pretty minimal in the write-ups, though.
Here we go, getting it done!
9. Elliott Smith - XOThere aren't many sounds in this world that I prefer to that of Elliott Smith's subdued voice, multitracked into lush and elegant harmonies, whispering poisonously depressing words over soft, guitar-driven folk-influenced music. XO is my favorite album of his. Boasting a better production than his previous, more lo-fi sounding records, the album also marks a step up in his songwriting. (which was already miles ahead of his peers) Each song is driven by memorable and poignant melodies, which is what make his tender style so accessible and enjoyable.
Favorites: Walt #1, I Didn't Understand
8. Off Minor - The Heat Death of the UniverseThere are probably not many appreciators of screamo-style music around here, so I don't expect a loving reception of The Heat Death of the Universe, but Off Minor's debut is a masterpiece of violently emotional jazzy hardcore, overflowing with stunning instrumental acrobatics tightly woven into layered arrangements full of dissonance and clashing guitar chords against subtle bass work and heavily jazz-influenced drumming.
Favorites: Monday Morning Quarterback, Punch for Punch
7. Tomáš Dvořák - Machinarium (OST)Essentially, Machinarium is the perfect game soundtrack. I've never come across another game with music that weaves itself so tightly into the gameplay itself and enhances every bit of the experience, matching each mood and surrounding perfectly, and yet stands alone so well as an album of beautifully lush and intricate electronic music.
Favorites: Mr. Handagote, The Sea
6. Sigur Ros - Ágætis ByrjunWonderful album. My favorite from Sigur Ros. Yeah
