"panic attack" opinions
« on: June 04, 2011, 05:31:46 PM »
I was listening to panic attack on the way to the skate park with my 9 and 11 year old sons and this is one of those songs that you cant help but start playing air guitar or drums.. My 2 boys love this song and ask me to play it constantly. I cant wait and hope that MM plays this song,it will be epic. any thoughts or opinions on the song?   :metal

I think Panic Attack is a great song with a lot of intensity! It's number 2 on 8vm behind the title track of course!

I used to love it. I thought it was perfection. Then I hated it. Now I think it is ok but overplayed.

Yes. I called a Dream Theater song overplayed.

Its in the same category as Constant Motion for me
I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

It makes me feel like I'm having a panic attack. I love the riff before the solo, the whole riffs are great.

I enjoy it. I'd say it's in the top half of Dream Theater's catalog, for what it's worth.

Also, this song has become somewhat underrated among hardcore DT fans ever since it was featured in Rock Band, IMO.

It's honestly one of my least favorite Dream Theater songs.

meh, it's ok. it's definitely not bad, though. certainly one of the stronger tracks on 8v.
There is so little respek left in the world, that if you look it up in the dictionary, you'll find that it has been taken out.

Wow, I'm suprised this song is getting so much negative criticism here. I think the song is fantastic. Great riffs, great hooks, and melodies. I'd rate it 8.5/10.

I Thinks it's an amazing song. ToT tried to be really heavy but PA tops the majority of ToTs songs, it's really good, specially the "Helpless Hysteria" part. It gets me amped!

I am suprised as well from the bad reactions to the song. it is high energy through the whole song and blows away any song on systematic chaos imo.I guess I have a liking for the more metal songs and like the fact that my 2 sons think its kick ass!! :metal

Also, this song has become somewhat underrated among hardcore DT fans ever since it was featured in Rock Band, IMO.

This.

I'd bet cash money that at least some DT fans would like Panic Attack better if it hadn't been featured on Rock Band.  Because of Rock Band, Panic Attack has more exposure among non-DT fans than many other DT songs, and is therefore talked about by non-DT fans more than many other DT songs.  Since it’s talked about more than other DT songs, DT fans grow to resent it for getting more attention than their favorites.  So what happens is, you become overexposed to a song that you might otherwise like, and end up hating it.

I’m not saying this applies to everyone, because certainly it doesn’t.  But you know it’s a little annoying when you mention that you like Dream Theater, and the other guy says he does too, yet he can’t name any DT songs aside from Panic Attack.  I know that annoys me, anyway.

As for myself, I think Panic Attack’s pretty great.  Wouldn’t call it a favorite, but a very good song.  (Admittedly I may be biased – I also like PoW and Never Enough, so I do tend to like the Muse influenced DT songs  that everybody hates)
Sincerely,
Jaffa

I love Panic Attack. For a while after I bought 8V, it was the only song other than the title track that I'd listen too.
would have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Winger Theater Forums........or WTF.  ;D
TAC got a higher score than me in the electronic round? Honestly, can I just drop out now? :lol

Again its only my opinion but SC has fallen in my ratings compared to ToT ,Awake and Octovarium .I really think the last 2 albums have been let downs compared to the cds i just mentioned. sorry to get off topic

I agree Tac,and lately i really have gotten into 8v. I hope that the new cd is in the 8v vain leaning towards the heavier stuff

Panic attack is awesome, probably the second best from 8VM, though TROAE and SS are close behind it :D

Not a fan.  It's not an outright bad song or anything, I just find it uninteresting and never feel like listening to it.

Panic Attack is a killer song for me, second best from 8VM. Great opening Myung part, then heavy riffs, awesome solo's... It has that 8VM vibe which I think not working good for every DT fan ;) but for me it's OK :metal :tup

I think the song is good, but there's just something.... off.... about the production.  It seems like the intensity of the song isn't created with the performances, but rather with the mixing.  That's just how my ears hear that song.

You know I thought the same thing until I saw it live and then on the CiM DVD, and then I realized that the song just lacks any kind of intensity at all, despite the mix.

A great song. Not only because of the bass intro and the intensity.

James singing "Run. Try to hide" is one of the most beautiful DT moments.

It's a good song, nothing fantastic about it, nothing bad about it either. Was one of the first DT songs I heard, though!
