If Muyng left DT who would you like as a replacement?
« on: May 31, 2011, 01:06:10 AM »
I think a few of us actually thought about Mangini as the best possible alternative when Portnoy left.

What would happen if Muyng left?

Any bassplayer out there that you think would fit in the band?

My first thought was be Billy Sheehan, but I don´t think he could nail their most complex songs actually.  :P

Tony Levin

Dave Larue
I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

Tony Levin indeed.  :metal

But man, I sure wouldn't like Myung to leave Dream Theater, it would be such a sad day...

If JM left, I highly, highly doubt that JP (and the rest of the band) would continue without him. Two of the three founding members would be gone at that point, and the (now rekindled) chemistry between JP and JM has always been crucial within DT imo.

Me too, but if Portnoy didn´t leave then it would have been a situation similar to what we had a few months ago I guess.

For some reason it seems harder to find a good replacement for Muyng. I Don´t think that Tony Levin would be interested in joining DT today actually.

Here in Sweden we have a couple of excellent bassplayers that would be interested in auditioning for sure (Dick lövgren,Jonas Reingold etc.)

I don´t think very many of the greatest American bassplayers would be interested though, since they aren´t into progressive metal.

I am trying to picture Jeff Berlin in DT right now  :lol  No doubt that he could have played all of Muyngs bassparts though. Same with bassists like Wooten, Manring. Sklarevski etc.

They could learn all the songs and play them great if they wanted to.  :P

I highly doubt they would carry on without Myung. Quite ironic considering that I thought MP would be the last one to leave DT (except maybe JP)! :lol

It's almost impossible for Myung to leave the band, primarily because he seems like a person who'd rather suppress his own ego and adjust with the way others want things to be rather than leave the band, unless he's pushed really really far (absolutely no offense meant to MP or any of the others who left). Yet, in a purely hypothetical scenario, I would love it if Billy Sheehan joined. Then there's Troy Tipton who plays for a band called Zero Hour who could be a fair fit.

Brilliant funkplaying, but I am not sure that he could play DT´s stuff actually

Paul Jackson has propably not played anything that comes even close to DT.

Dance of Eternity for instance is really dfficult for someone who isn´t used too that kind of music. I doubt that even Billy Sheehan could play it live without making mistakes.

If they WERE to continue on, I would also suggest Tony Levin, based solely on how well he gelled with MP, JP and JR on LTE. Even if MP is no longer in the band, MM would probably fit that mix just as well.

I wasn't serious about him. If I had to pick some one it would probably be Tony Levin, or maybe Randy George.
