The sound took a bit of getting use to, but I don't have an issue with it.

I got no problem with Nick Raskulinecz. He has produced some really great albums, like the latest Rush albums.

But, it is exciting that they are working with Brendan O Brien Again!

Shogun is an exception but I don't think he gets the best sounding albums based on other albums he's done.

I liked the sound of Once More. One of the better sounding albums from Raskulinecz. Generally not a fan his work, really dislike the sound of Clockwork Angels by Rush and One By One by Foos.

I agree.  Folks thought DT12 was compressed.  Clockwork Angels is even more so than DT12.

BTW, I have never listened to Mastodon.  Just listened to Crack the Skye.  The Last Baron is awesome :metal

Clockwork Angels borders on unlistenable. I remember they were talking about remixing Vapor Trails around the time CA came out, couldn't believe that they made the same mistake again.

??? I don't have a problem listening to CA. I mean, the production could be a lot better, but it's not that bad.

Ghost's Infestissumum isn't horrible--not great, but good. Although the band hasn't been ecstatic about that record, but I don't think it's because of Nick

Neither do i. Clockwork Angels mix is not annoying, not like the original Vapor Trails mix.

Like i said, i'm very interested to hear what Mastodon is able to do with O'Brien again!

MASTODON finishing up their new album. Mixing to start soon.

 :metal :dangerwillrobinson:

My most anticipated album after Dream Theater, Green Day and Metallica. Cannot wait for this!!!

- Also I checked when they started tracking and it was less than a month ago!!! That must mean they recorded mostly live and rehearsed the absolute shit out of the songs.

Makes you wonder why bands like TOOL and Metallica track records for 2 years or more..

I'm guessing that "finishing up" means tracking anything that wasn't basic drums bass and rhythms.

Since Brent and Bill have posted pics of guitar recording since this new story.

Still - Metallica started recording September 2014 and were recording lead guitar as late as spring this year so Mastodon work pretty f---ing fast. :D

Looking forward to it. I got on board with Crack the Skye, after a recommendation at this forum, and I've never looked back. Saw them on the tour for The Hunter and met them at an in-store (got my vinyl of Crack the Skye autographed and a photo). Love their stuff, although prefer Blood Mountain through present. I really liked Once More 'Round the Sun, but Crack the Skye continues to be my favorite.

I didn't have a problem with Nick as the producer either, but happy they have reunited with O'Brien, since he produced the record from them I like the most.

I was on board as soon as I heard Blood & Thunder back in 04.

My friend burned Leviathan onto a MD for me and I loved it.

Me too, heard them on a Kerrang! free CD. Actually, now I think of it, I think it may have been I Am Ahab that I heard first  :metal

I saw them opening for Maiden, thought they were horrible. A couple years later a friend told me to check out Crack the Skye and I thought it was really solid. Tried the latest album at the time (The Hunter) and I thought that was really good too. Once More is the best of them all IMO. Really looking forward to what the future has in store for them. I still haven't really explored their back catalog, although I want to at some point.

One disc was to be Brent's solo writings and the other was a collaboration between the other three, right?
...I wonder if they told Brent to just save his material for a side project of his choosing.

The way Brann said it - they've used everyone's best material.

I Hope so. I could use another Crack The Skye..

Cool !

They all seem like chill dudes. Dunno about Brent but the other 3 certainly do. Down to Earth and no egos. One band where If I had to choose a member to quit - i wouldn't be able to.

They all 4 of them bring something to the band that would be irreplaceable. Troy's Voice. Brent writing and guitar playing. Brann's crazy drumming. Bill has that awesome growl

and can do backing vocals and just seems like the nicest guy ever.

Mastodon were originally two bands that joined together right ?

Wasn't it Brann and Brent in one band and Troy and Bill in another band ?
