What with the explicit content stamp?  Mine doesn't have that and besides Aunt Lisa, there's no swearing is there?

Four fucking's in Aunt Lisa and one barely audible Fuck in the title track - " i'm here to fuck up this place ". But if it wasn't in the lyric book - you'd never hear it anyway it's kinda muffled and hurried out.

I love Diamond in the witch house :)

Album is growing on me nicely. I think it will end up somewhere in the upper middle below Hunter & Crack The Skye in my rankings but above Blood Mountain and Leviathan.

Which is damning with faint praise since they've never done a "bad" album.

This is what I'm predicting as well, although I'm only on my third listen so far.

I'm kinda surprised they still do explicit versions. For what? The Christian radio channel for kids?

Yeh kids all know the F and C words these days. Not letting your kids hear bad language won't stop them hearing it elsewhere - or indeed everywhere else.

That's hardly the point. Some parents will want to keep their kids away from explicit language as much as possible, and should have the option of knowing whether an album contains it.

To be honest, I'd argue the "should" bit of that, but at the very least, they shouldn't have the thing stamped onto the booklet itself. Now the artwork is messed up. What's up with that?

Good news: the Black Tongue beer that I ordered over a month ago arrived this past weekend, so I'll be drinking it while I listen to the new album tonight. :hat

Oh and it gets better, for you see, the Black Tongue is none other than...

I'm gonna have fun tonight! :tup :metal  :hat

i was gonna say the same thing. put a sticker on the jewel case if you have to, but don't print it on the damn art!

My god you guys are hyped for this album. Having barely any listening experience with Mastodon I got intrigued. This sounds more rock oriented...I always thought Mastodon was more a prog/tech metal band? Shows my lack of knowledge.  :lol
Kind of like it but needs a few more spins.

Remission - their debut is pretty much all out hardcore with only harsh vocals and drop A tuning and crazy drums. Their Call Of The Mastodon release even has blast beats on it.

Leviathan is a lot more melodic and has actual singing.

Blood Mountain is a big change stylistically. A lot more singing and melodic guitar parts.

Crack The Skye is obviously their big proggy opus concept album & The Hunter takes the melody of Crack The Skye and has more concise and catchy simpler songs.

:)

Just double checked my cd and I was mistaken, mine does have the explicit content thing stamped on the artwork.

This album is freaking killer though. I got it on repeat in the car.

Diamond in the Witch House is SO good. I kinda wish more songs were as good as it, but as it stands this is a pretty solid top20 album of the year so far. Pretty great.

I'd love an entire album like Diamond In the Witch House.

Mastodon should just write an album with Scott Kelly.

Call it " Neuro-Don "

Winning idea right there ;D

Well, Troy did say that they were wanting to eventually have enough songs with cameos from Scott to eventually do an entire live set with him on vocals. Maybe that could be a future live album they do?

Once more could already be my second favourite album by Mastodon (behind Crack the Skye). I like all their albums but there were always few songs that didn't click with me (especially on BM) but like all songs on the new album.  My favourites so far: Thread lightly, The Motherload and Chimes at Midnight.

I've checked them, too few years ago I didn't like them. But I'm getting into Isis and Russian Circles and digging them so I could check Neurosis again.

Here's my controversial opinion on Once More 'Round the Sun;

Chimes at Midnight and Diamond in the Witch House are the weakest songs.

Although, this may change with time, that's how I feel at the moment, but that still means they are strong, just the rest are stronger.

close to how i feel, but i'd have to say Asleep in the Deep and Diamond in the Witch House are the weakest songs.  DITWH is just disappointing to me considering how great it could have been, whereas AITD has to be one of the worst songs they've ever written, just a mess of a song that goes nowhere.
Still not sure what to think of the album as a whole; some songs i was lukewarm on from first listen have grown on me, and The Motherload kicks ass!
But i feel they've lost some of the spark that was on Crack The Skye and every album prior.  I'll see how i feel after some more listens, but overall i'd say this is mildly disappointing from a band i love.

I have to be in a really good mood to listen to this album and not tired.

For some reason if i'm feeling a bit down or tired - then I don't enjoy it *as much*.

But under the right conditions - i f---ing love it.

But it doesn't come close to being *bad*.

My first impression was that Feast Your Eyes was my least favourite, but now it's honestly AITD. I mean, the verses are cool, as are some of the riffs, but I'm not completely into the chorus and considering that the song doesn't really have all that much to offer, it's just too long. I still really enjoy it in the context of the rest of the album though.

I'm liking this album, but as much as I loved the tracks on first listen it gets boring pretty fast. Production sounds thin as well.

In the end it does seem like a slightly watered down version of Mastodon. The energy of the older albums feels much better in comparison.
I'd rate the album 3/5, by no means a bad effort but slightly weak for Mastodon. The best parts are easily the guitar solos.

Just my opinion at the moment, it may change and I nonetheless encourage everyone to enjoy the hell out of this record.

I'd generously give it an 8/10 and realistically i'd say it's more like 6.5 - 7/10

I've been listening to it every day since it was on iTunes and I'm not getting tired of it - but I do need to give it a rest for a while.

I think it's better than Blood Mountain OR it's going to take a while to decide how much I like it in the long run

( which was the case for BM ).

But as I said earlier - it's one of those annoying albums which I love every 2nd time I listen to it.

This album is brilliant.

IMO, it's better than The Hunter, Crack the Skye and in time possibly Blood Mountain.

After three spins it's a solid listen but almost borderline background music. There's a lot of riffage but none that really sticks out for me and no songs have really reached that stage where I'd actively seek out to listen to them or if you played a 20 second clip I'd even remember which song it was from.

More or less this. While I like what I hear if I force myself to pay attention, there's not really anything there that catches my attention like The Hunter did from the first listen on. Still, I will continue listening, maybe it'll improve.
