I haven't been a huge Mastodon forever but this is my favorite album of the year by far and CTS was amazing. So yeah, they've certainly won me over with this release coming after CTS.

I think both CTS and The Hunter are about on the same level for me personally. They are just different animals to some extent (CTS obviously being a concept album). Although the tracks on The Hunter are stand alone in nature it seems I've found myself listening to the thing from beginning to end every time. :hefdaddy

You've pretty much explained it how I would, except I've been a mastodon fan for awhile :P

After a few more spins I like but don't love this album. I feel like I'm in the minority here but there's way too many songs that are just okay. Seems more like a B-side collection the more I listen to it.
Respectfully I'd have to disagree, listening through this album each and everytime, every song pulls me in and has its own special connection that makes it what it is, Each track is chock full of great things which makes it a full listen through everytime as  Idon't want to skip any songs.

Each song is unique, definitely. Gives it a better chance for me to warm up to them individually.

I still love every song on this album. The Hunter, The Creature Lives, and The Sparrow are still my favorites.
Orion....that's the one with a bunch of power chords and boringly harsh vocals, isn't it?

I love every Mastodon album instantly. But The Hunter just has that extra level of new album smell.

The beginning of Stargasm sounds so much like the beginning of The Czar. I keep expecting to hear "don't stay, run away."
Gadough isn't Hitler. He's much, much worse.

Yeah the melody at the beginning is definitely similar, but the Czar was my favorite song on CtS so I absolutely adore Stargasm.

The transition into that really rocking bit at the beginning is killer.

The guitar riff under " The atmosphere that floats above the earth is corrupt for man - this we know [ riff ]  What has dwelt within the early dawn has gone away - its ok "

Reminds me of Jelly Belly by Smashing Pumpkins.  :)

At this very moment This Mortal Soil is blowing my mind... blowing my mind....blowing my mind....blowing my mind....

Fucking love that song, especially when the vocals and rest of the band kick in. Such a gorgeous guitar melody.

And yeah - this album gets better every listen. A truly amazing achievement.

That video alone proves why all vocals should be done by Troy.  Brent shouldn't be allowed near the mic.

Brent should just take some time with a vocal coach to improve his live singing, it's pretty disappointing every time I hear it really.

Yeah, that's fine. But I think all three voices are so central to the Mastodon sound. Things wouldn't be complete with one of them left out.

Brent is just fine where he is in Mastodon's music.  The person who needs more vocals is definetly Brann, his voice is soooo good.
