Guys, let's take a minute and be honest with one another.

Leviathan is still their best album.
I haven't heard The Hunter yet, but CtS and BM are still my favorites.  Leviathan and Remission are tied for second place though lol

The only good Mastodon album is Remission.

I agree with you...

It's their only "good" album.......

The rest however, are "awesome" . :neverusethis:

Leviathan is awesome, just not as awesome as Crack the Skye.

Not sure where I'd place The Hunter, but it's pretty awesome so far.

Crack The Skye got me into this band.

I've given some tracks from their other albums a shot, but none really grabbed me. I've also been keeping up with this thread and finally decided to give The Hunter a spin.

Man, Stargasm started as I began typing this post. These guys make me smile. Their tone and instrumentation on this album is fantastic.

Listening to The Hunter for the first time....it's a weird album. "Creature Lives" is playing currently, such a different song compared to everything else they've done.

I love how The Hunter is different enough to be a logical progression from Crack The Skye. Yet familiar enough to not be too much of a 180 like

Metallica did when they followed up Metallica with Load.

I can hear Leviathan, Blood Mountain, Remission, Crack The Skye PLUS something new in The Hunter, which is quite a feat in itself.

I finally got my copy of The Hunter and damn is it good, I rate it right up there with CTS.   :hat

Blown away by the sound and I just had back to back to back listening session with Heritage and ADTOE thrown into the mix also (Just got them in the mail as well).

I may have overdone it  :lol  :metal

Since we're on a prog forum I'd suggest Crack The Skye as it is the proggiest of Mastodon's releases.

That being said, The Hunter is still a compelling album and is easily one of the best releases to come out this year. Not to mention it is simply a blast to listen to.

All IMHO.  :)

Leviathan is Mastodon's best album.

I haven't listened to Remission.

So, I've never heard Mastodon for a single second of my life until last night and I listened to The Hunter in its entirety, and I really enjoyed it and I think I'll delve more into the backlog of Mastodon... But I don't see how anyone of sane mind can even compare this to Heritage. Not to start shit, don't be getting up all in mah face, otay? Otaygoodthanks. But really... This doesn't come anywhere near touching the glorious anus of Heritage. It wallows in it's shit, which still smells better than the perfume that The Hunter wears. With that said, I truly think this album is a masterpiece in its own right.

But then I see another comparison to Opeth, and I laugh. Then I weep. Deeply.

And I ask myself once more, "Why don't I see more comparisons of Between the Buried and Me's 'Colors' to Simon and Garfunkel's 'Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme'?

DTP says "WOW, LOOK AT THAT GREAT POST"
RIP DTP.

No one's comparing it, just posting that they like it or prefer it to Heritage. Nothing wrong with that.

Just like I prefer Between the Buried and Me to... say Lady Gaga.

I don't have a problem with it in the least, people can compare whatever music they'd like to and I'll be dandy as a hookahbaiyo, but it just strikes me as odd. Not to mention I can't see this band coming close to touching the gloriousness that is Opeth no matter how many songs I listen to, but that's based off of a single album I've listened to once so fukitol. And yeah, I said 'see' as if I'm reading a bunch of comparisons but it was mainly the few that were made when the two were released and the rest is a friend of mine who happens to lurk at this forum a shit ton (I've told him to make an account thousands of times (srsly, thousands. dual parenthases fuck yeah) and he still resists like a pansy bitch; so fukitol) and is comparing them like they were two peas in a pod when I can't find a single god damn simularity between the two. I think they just so happened to release around the same time and it just so happened that many memebers on this forum like both bands...maybe, I don't know, but it weirds me out, man. It really does. It's like one guy comparing Cher and The Misfits, it just gives me a bad vibe and makes me want to give someone a golden shower or something. I don't know. But if I were God, I'd outlaw that shit pronto.

P.S. I was under the impression that if someone posts that they like one album over another, it's a comparison. Is it not? Just a thought...

RIP DTP.

Guys let's talk about the Hunter, not the albums that have been out for like 5 years.

The Hunter is fantastic. Man, I love the Cynic-esque vocodor vocals in "Bedazzled Fingernails". So fuckin' cool. Isn't "fuckin' cool" like a synonym for Mastodon anyway?

If you arrive to Mastodon late - work backwards.

I've been a fan since 2004 so every album has sounded like a logical progression to me.

I can't imagine listening to Crack The Skye then hearing Call Of The Mastodon.

It's like two different bands.
