Crack The Skye and The Hunter are so awesome, that I think Mastodon might put out albus of this quality for a while. They don't seem to have any trouble doing so.

When they finally put out a "bad" album, it will almost be a shock. Or at least " Well, it had to happen at SOME point !  :eek "

The fact that this album is so good even though the guys just kinda went into it like "eh, let's make a record just for the hell of it" tells me that we have some serious musical geniuses here, and that we won't be seeing a letdown for a while.

As far as flow goes, maybe I just don't really give a shit, but the album seems to flow fine to me.

Holy hell this album blows CTS out of the water.

Let's not say anything TOO crazy.

But it does.  :)

Quoted for truth. It's so much better.

ALBUM OF THE YEAR ALL YEARS HOLY SHIT IT'S SO FUCKING GOOD!

CAPS LOCK!
I imagined the story to go more like this.

I was sitting a traffic light blaring Space Dye Vest and next to me in another car was Kevin Moore. And I'll never be open again.

It probably isn't in my top30 or so, but for anyone who really loves Mastodon, I can see if they would rank it very high. :)

Definitely beats the shit out of Crack the Skye.
Orion....that's the one with a bunch of power chords and boringly harsh vocals, isn't it?

Naw, Crack the Skye is still the more powerful album.

Regardless, this album kicks nuts.
I felt its length in quite a few places.

Kill yourself. If this is the part of your life that you are at, then you obviously are not living happily. Therefore there is nothing else to live for.

I didn't know being happy was requisite upon liking sludge.

I'll just listen to Repugnant instead.

Seriously?  If you really need Remission style Mastodon so bad, there's also Mose Giganticus and Knut you know?  I mean I like them too, but you have such a shallow window of whatever the hell it is that makes you say Mastodon's only good album is Remission.  Fucking A man.

Yes, my liking of a single album from a otherwise mediocre and overrated band makes me have a small window of knowledge (I'm assuming that's what you are saying) of sludge.

Mediocre and overrated?  :lol
I didn't mean knowledge of sludge, I can't even explain, its just really comes off as arrogant and dumb.
Repugnant's a death metal band anyways, and their lead member is actually The Nameless Ghoul in Ghost :D

If you want more "early" Mastodon - you might find Baroness to be more your taste.  :tup

They're similar in tones, but I actually disagree when they're lumped together.  They're really diverse and different.  But then again, Baroness is awesome as well so might as well recommend them lol.

Just got the album last night. I'm on spin two of the album. LOVE the emphasis on vocal harmonies. This is a killer record. Very, very cool. It departs a bit from Crack the Skye, but that's totally fine. Love the tunes.

I know some folks may be taken aback at the shorter, more accessible songs, but I think as long as they go into the longer epics again in the future, this was a nice change of pace. Could help bring in new fans as well.

Totally impressed. Loving it.   :metal

Then what you should have said was that my opinion, according to you, is arrogant and dumb. I know they're death metal, I'm just on a swedeath kick lately and felt like pimping them.

Why none of you are recommending acid bath and eyehategod is beyond me.

This isn't the sludgemetal recommendation thread, and they're not very similar to Mastodon duh.

Have fun holding that view while simultaneously recommending sludge bands. Anyways I don't want to let this thread get derailed, so I'll just say that I own all the mastodon albums besides their newest, and I liked them quite a bit, but I only enjoy Remission anymore before leaving <3

Recommending bands similar to Mastodon,  derp.  Your point?
EDIT: Exemption.  Metalsucks just showed me them.  I disagree aside from some of the riffage, still pretty good though and their album is free of bandcamp.

I'm curious. I like Remission a hair better than Leviathan and everything else much less. I've been into them since '04 (when the video for March of the Fire Ants began getting airplay on the watered-down nouveau Headbanger's Ball) so I guess that makes me an old-timer in their fanbase's ranks. Do any other old-timers not like Remission/Leviathan more than the stuff released since?

CtS has grown on me a fair bit and I hope TH does as well but a couple listens in I'm still searching for even one KILLER RIFF :metal moment but nothing's grabbed me yet. I'll keep giving it a full spin at least once every couple day's with optimism.

Guys, let's take a minute and be honest with one another.

Leviathan is still their best album.
