...and they were also released at the same time and a lot of people listen to both bands. Makes sense to me.

Orion....that's the one with a bunch of power chords and boringly harsh vocals, isn't it?

I don't think that's the point of the comparisons. People are just saying that they enjoy The Hunter more than Heritage. Not sure why you're complaining about that comparison tbh.

I wasn't complaining just wondering.

I think they are both great albums but anyway back to the original topic...

Yeah it's one of the best songs. Along with Curl of the Burl, Black Tongue, Creature Lives, and Bedazzled Fingernails.

Because they were both extremely anticipated on this forum, came out a week apart, and have had very differnet responses.

Not that that's a reason, but that's why.

Mine doesn't get here until Friday.  :'(

Very jealous. I could go listen online now, but don't want to spoil the fun.

There's no logical reason for the comparison though. What about all the albums by metal bands that came out this autumn?

Those comparisons would be fine too. People aren't comparing if they're similar musically. They're just saying "oh I enjoy this one more." It's really not a big deal.

Understood where he was coming from and respected his well-written review until he said that Torche was better than The Hunter.  Fuck that band.

Is there seriously anything *NOT* to like about The Hunter ?

Outstanding production - drums sound fantastic.

Guitars are beefy and the vocal melodies are gorgeous.

The songs are amongst the best the band have done and there's no weak moment ( depending on your opinion of Creature Lives. )

I believe the first time I heard Mastodon was from Rock Band. It was Colony of Birchmen from Blood Mountain and I didn't really care for it. I've had forms of Leviathan and Crack the Skye but I haven't really taken the time to listen to them. I think I'm going to change that tonight and buy The Hunter, because the songs I've heard at first didn't appeal to me but damn they're growing now.

I'm also probably going to buy most of their discog., is Remission worth it or not?

Is there seriously anything *NOT* to like about The Hunter ?

Not enough Grade A songs/riffs and many of the songs don't really resolve into anything super interesting. As a collection of songs it kicks some ass but as an album it's a little too scattershot to make me really wanna listen to the whole thing. The experimentation is cool but most of the time they sound best when they're sticking to the regular Mastodon sound ("Black Tongue", "Spectrelight", and to a certain extent "Curl Of The Burl"). The songs will grow on me, though, but it just doesn't flow very well as an album.

I disagree ! I think it flows great from start to finish ! :)

And I love that there is a new sound on there.

They don't put out the exact same album every 2 years like Motorhead - AC/DC - Slayer etc..

Yeah I agree that it doesn't really feel like a coherent album but more like a collection of good songs.
