I listened on headphones and so far it doesn't sound like " The biggest fullest sounding album we've done " - Bill Kelliher.

Emperor Of Sand had a massive expansive sound and every instrument sounded really big.

But the main riff is so Leviathan and the artwork is like the first few albums too.

Excited for the album.

On first listen impression, it sounded like the best sounding Alvin album of their's to me. I really liked the sound of EOS also.

Pushing The Tides sonically is Like Emperor Sand crossed with Leviathan.

That main riff is awesome. The drums don't cut through quite as much as their other albums.

Musically it reminds me of Hearts Alive crossed with Andromeda.


They got the same cover artist back from Remission - Skye. I wonder if this album is closer to the first few albums. I wouldn't mind. I'm happy with whatever.

Apparently it's a double album which makes me nervous. But in 21 years - they've never put out a 'shit' album. I'm optimistic.

I'm hoping that it's a double album in the same way that Metallica's Hardwired...To Self Destruct was a double or Opposites by Biffy Clyro.

Double in length but will still fit on a single CD.

Looks like it's +/- 85 mins on 2 CDs but 7 - 8 songs on each. Like what Metallica did with their last album. It makes for a nice CD package imo.

Inb4 which disc do you prefer ?

I wonder if the CDs will be named " Hushed " and " Grim ". Although I hope it's not one CD of Classic Mastodon and one of ballads. Not sure i'd enjoy that.

I'd prefer a melting pot of all their styles across all 85 mins. I don't want their " In Your Honour ".

This is an interesting comparison! I would however say Crack The Skye (probably my favorite of theirs, at least on certain days), while "proggier" (longer songs, more variety of moods), is an easier listen than Blood Mountain, which has some songs that are a kinda all over the place. In that respect, I don't know if I'd view Crack The Skye vs. Blood Mountain the same way as AJFA vs. MOP. But it might just be nitpicking 

On the other hand, Once More and Emperor, to me, are a (slight) return to a less streamlined sound (compared to the Hunter), while Load/Reload definitely were Metallica doing their thing and further distancing themselves from the "metal" sound they were known for.

I see there's a parallel between heavy bands widening their influence.

What I've loved about the shift to more classic rock influence with Mastodon is that it felt really natural, has become cemented as part of their sound and they've successfully pushed on with consistently great releases without really missing a beat.

Metallica's change felt like more of a hard left and fell apart after a release or two, combined with a general collapse in quality and reputation that took them 20 years to recover from, abandoning that previous change completely.

Well there was FIVE years between Metallica and Load. If there was an album in between I bet it would sound like Hardwired... Like a bit of both.

Five years is a long time and obviously your tastes and influences are going to change.

Also Metallica following And Justice For All after 3 years was a more gradual change. So you can hear where they were going.

I can't imagine what another album in the style of the first 4 would have sounded like. The band themselves all say they couldn't go any further in that style.

Anyway - HUSHED AND GRIM. October 29. I might have to get the double vinyl of this.
