Crack the Skye is a great place to start  :tup I got into Mastodon with Once More Round The Sun, which probably is their most accessible album, and still one of my favourites of theirs.

Crack the Skye would probably get my vote too. I'd also actually suggest checking out their latest. It's AotY for me so far and is a great blend of all their different sides, in my opinion.

I started with Leviathan when it came out. Nothing wrong with fling chronologically from there, imo!  ;D

Recommendations for a n00b please. I read The Hunter is their most critically acclaimed, start there?

Nah, the band's two most critically acclaimed albums are Leviathan and Crack the Skye. Either of those two albums are good starting places, but they're both quite different.

Crack the Skye is a good starting point.

Then you can move onto Leviathan and Emperor of sand. If you like the former better, go with Remission and Blood mountain afterwards. If you prefer Emperor, check out The Hunter and Once more 'round the sun.

I'd say start with Crack the Skye and Leviathan. By far their 3 best albums IMO

3:31 had my jaw on the floor. I know I may be a minority in this, but I want an album of tracks like this. This has held my attention far more than Emperor of Sand has. I love it so far

North Side Star is pretty interesting.  Reminds me a lot of The Tea Party in places actually.

Toes to Toes is better than most of EOS IMO.

The EP is up on Spotify. It's terrific!

I've been out of touch with this band since Once More Round the Sun and forgot to check out Emperor of Sand when it came out. Going to listen to that and then this new EP now.

Emperor of the Sand is really consistent all the way thru.  If you get a chance, bring up the video of 'Show Yourself'. :lol

I really love EoS. It is so much better than their previous two albums by quite a long shot. I still think this is going to be my AotY.

Liking the new EP but after only 2 listens it's still growing.

If you get a chance, bring up the video of 'Show Yourself'. :lol

I listened to the album and EP back to back and it's an amazing listen. While 'Once' wasn't a bad album I just couldn't listen to it repeatedly due to how terrible the sound was. I'm glad they went back to Brendan O'Brien. This album sounds great even on a streaming service. Will have to get the CD asap.

I see they announced a summer US tour with Primus. I'm interested because I love both, but I hope Primus doesn't focus too much on their last album, I thought it was awful. But most seemed to like The Seven, so I'm sure it will be a great show

That's kind of a disappointing tour pairing for me. Never been able to get into Primus and I really want to see Mastodon. looks like it may be a coheadlining show? Might have to pass unless Mastodon still get 1.5+ hours on stage.
