Yeah I thought the production of the album was pretty nice myself, sounded great in my car, the bass especially :D

Yeah, it has a really good bottom end.  I'm loving A Gray So Dark at the moment.

The production is superb, an old pro like Colin Richardson has been doing this for many years now.
I love the bonus DVD of the live in the studio songs.

My first Trivium CD purchase.

The galloping riff in Chaos Reigns is just too awesome for words.

I'm still thinking I like Shogun better than In Waves, but In Waves is just a piece of gold, I really love every song on the album, and I find that there's more memorable melodies and riffs than in Shogun for the most part!

I think I like the production job on In Waves better. But Shogun is also very good.

I liked Ascendancy back in the day but Crusade put me off them. Just getting back into them.

Should I stay away from The Crusade ?

I've heard "We are The Fire" - is it all that cheesy ? :)

Not a huge fan of the Crusade myself, it's nothing terrible, but I prefer all of their other albums over it.

Been listening to Shogun all evening....

Then put Chaos Reigns on...

The huge leap in production quality is glaring

That gallop  :metal

New album rankings:

1. Ascendency
2. Shogun
3. In Waves
4. Ember to Inferno
5. The Crusade

I still like The Crusade quite a bit, but unfortunately, it now suffers from being the "sore thumb" of the Trivium catalog.

I have to say that when I saw the video for We Are The Fire at a friend's house - we were both on the floor.  :rollin

They've definitely improved since then.   :tup

Anthem is probably the worst song on The Crusade.

Got In Waves. It's... okay. After three listens, nothing really sticks out yet. I will give it some time, though. So far, I'm enjoying the bonus disc with the concert more than the actual album itself.

I agree with Gadough, that is by a mile the worst song on the album. Definitely worth checking out the album, even if you don't buy it. The title track is fantastic.

Still not thrilled with this album, but Chaos Reigns is really good, as are a number of other songs which are growing on me.

What, exactly, is so terrible about the Crusade?

I never said it's terrible. They changed their sound to more straightforward thrash metal with Hetfield-esque clean vocals with almost no harsh vocals. There was a fan backlash. So, even though it was a good album with good songs, the band decided to return to their previous style on their next album, Shogun. I placed it last on my ranking simply because it lacks some of the power that their other albums have, and because it sticks out in their discography.

Personally I think it's much better than Shogun. Tracks like Becoming the Dragon, To The Rats, Contempt Breeds Contamination and, as I mentioned before, the title track easily stand up to anything else in their discography for me. Yes the vocals take a little getting used to but they're not terrible by any stretch.

I am very glad though that they're gone back to incorporating screams. I think they were trying to 'do a Sevenfold' and thought that omitting those vocals would bring in a greater fan base, because they even started performing the older songs with clean vocals, which was awful just awful.

The music of In Waves is awesome. The weakest link, by far, is the vocals. Not the harsh vocals, mind you, but the clean ones. Which says a lot coming from me, since I don't really like harsh vocals very much.

I knew what that was going to be before even clicking on it.  I remmeber watching those live clips before the release of Crusade.  I was so dissapointed.  I thought he was doing that though because he damaged his vocals chords.  There was a lot of talk that Matt had ruined his vocal chords from screaming and they were not likely to ever scream again.

Dude I was at that festival. The crowd was good but just weren't into it the same way as they were the year before, when Trivium played the same stage but with the original style vocals, even though Heafy decided to spend most of the time away from the mic  :lol

1.Ascendency
2.Shogun
3.In Waves
4.Ember Inferno
5.Crusade.
--------
Pretty much my problem with In Waves is that it's made for radio play, so the quality of the songs aren't what I think they could've been.  But I've never liked Crusade, and still need to give Ember Inferno a listen, so thats my rankings.
I will say that his screams on In Waves are the best they've been since Ascendancy.  His screams on Shogun were not the best.

Haven't heard In Waves too much but I think Shogun has the best production on a metal album today. Or one of the best at the very least.

In Waves production is fantastic. I put it on after  The Blackening and it was a lot quieter and seems to have a lot of headroom. Sounds great.

Yeah I know that's not saying much since The Blackening is horribly compressed but In Waves seems to breathe quite a lot more and the guitar sound is just incredible.

To me they sounded the most strained.  Still a good album, but meh.

Just listenede to In Waves (song).  I'm still undecided about whether to get this.  I agree about the guitar tone sounding awsome.  But, man, those screams just sound so stupid and drag everything down.  Maybe I'll wait until after the DT show and see how I like them in a live setting.

In Waves isn't really a good song to judge the band to be honest, they have better songs to represent who they are, like Into the Mouth of Hell We March, Like Light to the Flies, Ember to Inferno, Shogun, The Crusade, Caustic Are The Ties That Bind. I highly recommend those songs  :tup

Edit: In Waves (the song) is nothing without Capsizing The Sea as the intro  ;)
