Yea, Karma on a site like this is definitely a terrible idea.

Karma systems work better when you can only upvote people.
Actually this is a better idea than mine.  Sort of like facebook "likes", I guess.
"All great works are prepared in the desert, including the redemption of the world. The precursors, the followers, the Master Himself, all obeyed or have to obey one and the same law. Prophets, apostles, preachers, martyrs, pioneers of knowledge, inspired artists in every art, ordinary men and the Man-God, all pay tribute to loneliness, to the life of silence, to the night." - A. Not sure how I really feel about it, but GameFAQs has an interesting Karma based system (albeit a horrible community of posters)

Basically, every day that you make a post, you get +1 Karma.

As you get more and more Karma, you get more posting privileges. At around 100, you can delete your posts, and aren't limited to a specific number of posts a day. (Before 100 you can only post like 15 or 20 times, to avoid spam) When you're at like 150, you can access Veteran Boards, etc etc.

When your posts are flagged and moderated, you can lose karma, depending on the severity of your infraction. A non-serious offense might yield in a post deletion and the loss of 3 Karma. More significant infractions cause you to lose 10 Karma and be limited to 10 posts a day for a week.

If you got negative in Karma, you're automatically banned, and you can be banned obviously if the post is bad enough, even if you don't go into negative Karma.

There's no inter-user up and downvoting of Karma that takes place.

Again, I don't know how I feel about it, but it's definitely an interesting system.

Sounds like a lot of work and a lot of regulations for something that, in the end, doesn't even matter.  If new people want to know who's "cool" or a good poster or what, they can lurk for a day or two and figure it out themselves.  Other than that, it's all just ego-stroking and/or opportunities for people to get pissed off, and pissed on.

Yea, the more I think about it, I bet the Karma system on GameFAQs played a big part in making their community utter shit.

The only applause I'd give their system is that it's really unique.

Don't get me wrong; it sounds like a unique system, the design of which somebody put a lot of thought into.  As a programmer, that kind of thing appeals to me.  But I also have to look at it from the end-user point of view, and how it would apply here, and just think that it's taking a "fun" thing a going a little crazy with it.  Too often, those systems only work when the users are all pretty cool to begin with, and in those cases you don't actually need such a system.  It's a paradox.

Oh believe me, I was not suggesting it to be used here, the word Karma just reminded me of it, so I decided to talk about it for some reason. :lol

I feel like it's only useful on "help" forums.

Good point.  If you're just dropping in to try and get some help or advice, it's important to know who you should listen to.

I wanted to suggest something similar and found this thread. I think posts should have an up-vote possibility. And I have a good reason for that. Every time something big is happening, we have a master thread and as more events come, they get posted to that thread and then buried under the pages of discussion. People can't find the relevant posts then, that brought the new pieces of info. And people who skim through long threads don't have any way to catch the important ones and skip the waste.

If we had a button that would say "mark this post as important" (not good or bad) and we'd see the number of votes, it would really help IMO.

I don't think Karma is a good idea, but titles set by post count would be cool. I'd imagine that new members, with only 0-20 posts, could be have their titles automatically set as "Raw Dog." People with a lot of posts could be "The Count of Tuscany." Finally, once you've got 5,000 or so, you can just set your own title  :P

I've never liked the concept of rewarding users simply for post count.  It seems like it would promote postwhoring and overall emphasis on quantity rather than quality.

This.

How about we put in a "I don't give a fuck" button?  I would be beating the shit out of that one.

I'd imagine my good karma amount would be pretty high since I'm pretty much the greatest poster on these forums.

Before this thread you were virtually anonymous and undistinguished in the sea of posters here.

Now you're ego maniac.

Negative karma.
