Ariich and I have pretty similar tastes....even things like Shpongle to Ulver to The Dear Hunter.

But the following albums;

35. Devin Townsend – Addicted! [2009]
10. Shpongle – Tales of the Inexpressible [2001]
9. Pink Floyd – Wish You Were Here [1975]
8. Opeth – Blackwater Park [2001]
6. Ulver – Perdition City [2000]
5. BT – This Binary Universe [2006]
1. The Dear Hunter - Act III: Life & Death [2009]

I'd say are 5 star and worth a listen to to any fan of music.

Jirpo

Already heard a few but I will listen to the rest, particularly the #1.

Silverchair – Neon Ballroom [1999]

Woah, awesome, good to see some Silverchair showing up over here.  Have you heard Diorama, perchance?  In my opinion that one is far and away their best.
I have, and it's also excellent, but NB is my favouritest. :D

Really loved the write-ups aswell, Ariich, even though I hadn't heard a lot of the albums.

ariich

Thanks man, glad you liked it.

Well done to Ravenheart and mrbeekle (who is my brother, by the way, and so possibly had an advantage) for figuring out my top 2!

Although that's true, you probably speak to people here about music a lot more than you do to me, so I'm proud for guessing nonetheless  ;D

Nick

Having BE at #2 severely limits how must I trust #3-#50.

I just will never understand how some people love that album.

:lol I guess. But you've known me longer. And it turns out Zander (Ravenheart) cheated and looked up my post in an old "top 5 albums" thread. Needless to say, I am outraged.

And that is why you fail. Also the fact that you can't spell the word "much".

I just will never understand how some people love that album.

Simply because it's one of the greatest pieces of music ever created.  I only discovered it about a year ago, but it changed the way I look at concept albums, BE is perfection in every way.  I still can't get over how good it is.

DAT CONCEPT
This. Pretentious? Maybe. But it has one of the coolest concepts I've ever seen.

Also, Iter Impius alone is enough to make the whole album awesome, let alone Imago, and Martius/Nauticus II.

ariich

There's nothing particularly pretentious about it. Some people like to describe it that way because it's intelligent and thoroughly researched but I don't think it's an appropriate description. If anything I'd say Scarsick is their pretentious album as it takes a certain viewpoint about modern society and all that. Whereas with Be, there are some themes that run through it but it's not like it's DG saying "this is my opinion, you better all agree".

Well pretentious is the wrong word. More like bombastic and kinda self-indulgent, but hey I'm a prog fan. I live off these things.

Ravenheart

"Pretentious" is a silly criticism that is as misapplied as it is overplayed. BE is a good album.

ariich

Oh definitely, completely self-indulgent! :lol But yeah I think people can be quick to use the word "pretentious" when it's not really appropriate.

Well that was his first mistake, obviously he should have made the album Emilie Autumn wanted him to make.

Well, that goes without saying.

Now I'm imagining PoS covering Emilie Autumn songs.

It's awesome.
