Dream Theater Create-a-Setlist Game
« on: May 12, 2011, 06:08:23 PM »
The Setup

Lots of threads suggest you create a dream setlist of some kind.  Maybe it's epic, maybe it's really long, or maybe it's supposed to be intentionally bad.  Because I love to do the same things as other people (he said without irony), I present yet another thread where you make up a setlist, but with a twist.

The basic premise is simple, choose at most three Dream Theater studio albums to draw the songs from (or the closet, see below).  Did you always want to imagine a DT concert that begins with A Nightmare to Remember (BCSL), closes out the first set with The Spirit Carries on (SFAM), ends the second set with Octavarium (8vm), and has Metropolis (I&W) as the encore?  Well too bad, this thread clearly isn't for you, because those songs come from four different albums.

You might be asking an obvious question now:  "What if I want to put Raw Dog into my set?  Since it's not on any of the studio albums, does that mean I can't?"  Er...oh... wait, I'm still the only one who likes Raw Dog?  Okay, well some of you probably want to use ACOS, right?  Okay, now I have your attention back.  All the songs not on the main ten DT studio albums are in another group I'm calling "The Closet":

A Change of Seasons
You Or Me
Don't Look Past Me
To Live Forever
Eve
Raise the Knife
Where Are You Now
The Way it Used to Be
Cover My Eyes
Speak to Me
Raw Dog
Another Won
Your Majesty
A Vision
Two Far
Vital Star
March of the Tyrant

The Closet presents a conundrum.  Most of the songs are at least semi-obscure, but you have so many choices.  What is one to do?  You decide!

Other rules:

 - 2 hour 40 minute max running time.  Basically this is a three hour show with 20 minutes of intermission.

 - You can use live or demo versions of any song from any album you choose.  So, for example, if you choose FII as one of your albums; you can use the Budokan Hollow Years, or the Making of FII TAMP.  But not Raise the Knife, because that's in The Closet.

My Concert

Albums:
Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
Falling Into Infinity
Images and Words

Set 1
The Glass Prison
The Great Debate
Hollow Years (Budokan length)/
War Inside My Head/
The Test that Stumped Them All
Surrounded
Just Let Me Breathe
Trial of Tears

Set 2
New Millennium
Under a Glass Moon
Peruvian Skies
Hell's Kitchen/
Lines in the Sand (Chaos in Motion version)
Misunderstood (Truncated outro)
Disappear
Take the Time

Encore
Wait for Sleep (with extended intro)
Learning to Live (with extended middle jam)

FOCUS:  Come up with your own setlist using only three albums.  Or, talk about the ones already in the thread.

Cool idea Reap!

Albums:
Falling Into Infinity
Images and Words
Octavarium

Set 1 (About 1:15)
New Millennium
These Walls
Just Let Me Breathe
Hollow Years (Extended)
Under a Glass Moon
Surrounded '07
Hell's Kitchen
Lines in the Sand

Set 2 (about 1:00)
Trial of Tears
I Walk Beside You
Peruvian Skies
Sacrificed Sons
Octavarium

Encore: (about 14 minutes)
Wait for Sleep
Learning to Live

My original plan was to have Sacrificed Sons close the first set and Trial of Tears close out the second and forget Octavarium as a challenge, but I couldn't do that to myself  :P

The second set is supposed to be played as a whole (I was a bit inspired by the standard setlist of the DT-YES tour), as I tried to match songs that could flow into each others. I would love to see the transition from TTTSTA and TDOE, or from Home to ATC(R).

I love the idea of splitting 8vrm.

Im gonna have to think on this one
I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

Me too. It has been with ACOS (with rather poor results IMO), with SDOIT (and went much better). The time has come to cut Octavarium into little pieces  :lol

I'll go with When dream and day unite, Images and words and Awake, because I kinda wanted to have a concept. Since Iron Maiden did ''The Early days'' tour, here's my take on what the setlist would look like if Dream Theater ever decides to go on a similar tour.

1. Pull me under
2. A Fortune in lies
3. Caught in a web
4. Lifting shadows of a dream
5. Afterlife
6. Light fuse and get away
7. Under a glass moon
8. Scarred
9. Only a matter of time
10. Erotomania
11. Voices
12. The Silent man
13. Wait for sleep
14. Learning to live
- - - - -
15. Metropolis

My second shot, this time using the most obscure material:

FII, WDADU, The Closet

A Fortune In Lies
Another Won
Lines In The Sand
Afterlife
Where Are You Now?
Peruvian Skies
Speak To Me
Only A Matter Of Time

The Killing Hand (96- version)
Don't Look Past Me (!!)
You Or Me
Hollow Years (budokan onwards version)
The Ytse Jam
To Live Forever (outro Jam)
Status Seeker
Cover My Eyes
Raise The Knife
Eve
Trial Of Tears

A Change Of Seasons

Would you like that?

I happen to really like The Closet. Or at least, I like A Change of Seasons, the Images and Words sessions songs, and Speak to Me. There's a big drop-off after those songs.

Hollow Years segues into Lines in the Sand? Hell's Kitchen segues into As I Am?  :|
That would almost be as weird as Wait For Sleep flowing into This Dying Soul  :lol

Damn! This is tough!

The biggest difficulty with it is that you have to use basically 50+ mins from each album you choose. That means that, for me, stuff like Octavarium can't work, because I'm not a big fan of the rest of the album beyond the title track. Also rules out FII, BCSL, and WDADU for me right off the bat. ToT doesn't have much to choose from either, esp. since JP tends to screw up the Endless Sacrifice solos live, and I wouldn't want to see that. I'm not a huge Awake fanboy either, so that's out

So I guess I'm going Images...Scenes...and either Six Degrees or SC. Guess I'll go with 6DOIT, because the two songs I'd take from there are the title track and TGP, whereas with SC, I'd take ITPOE and TMOLS. With ITPOE and TMOLS, they both scream "Set 2" to me, and it would suck to just alternate between Images and Scenes songs for an entire set. Plus, the 6DOIT songs take up more time.

Set 1:
Metropolis (approx. 9 min)
Fatal Tragedy (7)
Another Day (5)
The Glass Prison (13)
Under A Glass Moon (8)
Beyond This Life--LaB version (20)
Take The Time (extended JP solo) (13)

Intermission

Set 2:
Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence (42)
Home (12)
Pull Me Under (original demo version with Erotomania in the middle, just for variety) (10)
The Spirit Carries On (7)

Encore: Learning to Live (12)
Yeah, I have no idea what the cakeless person in that analogy is meant to be eating. If he's got some sort of cake substitute, it should really have been worked into the narrative at some point. As it stands, the options are:

  • Hoard a cake just to stare blankly into its doughy edifice.
  • Make futile chewing motions with your mouth while starving to death.

Cool game, I love things like this  :D

Album choices are quite easy for me:
Images and Words
Train of Thought
Octavarium

I managed to get the running time down to 2hours44 minutes without losing anything too vital, but if the 2hour40m limit is strict, then it's a bit tougher. I wanted to have I&W in it's entirety, but I guess I've got to remove 1 song to get it below 2hr40. Plus that allows me to play around with the position of I&W songs, rather than having it flow like on the album version.

Set 1:
1.The Root of All Evil
2.Panic Attack
3.Pull Me Under
4.Endless Sacrifice
5.Another Day
6.Stream of Consciousness
7.In the Name of God
8.Wait for Sleep
9.Learning to Live

~~~~~Intermission~~~~~
Set 2:
10.As I Am
11.This Dying Soul
12.Under a Glass Moon
13.Sacrificed Sons
14.Take the Time
Encore:
15.Octavarium
Encore 2:
16.Metropolis Part 1
Total length:
2hours39m (Start to intermission - 1hour20m. Beginning of second set to end - 1hour19m.)
Images and Words - 7 songs - 51m
Train of Thought - 5 songs - 56m
Octavarium - 4 songs - 51m
Whoaaaahh, ohhh, ohhhhh. Whoaaaahh, ohhhhh, ohhhhhh. Waaah, ahhh, haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaowwwwww
