Crying to/because of music
« on: May 09, 2011, 02:39:38 PM »
I just had this thought, because a friend of mine had just said that a certain song brought her to tears.  This interested me, because it was a pretty cheesy and insincere pop song.  But still, music bringing someone to that kind of emotional level is at least a very interesting prospect.

Now, I listen to loads of music that could easily be considered very, very sad.  I've just never been prompted towards that sort of emotional reaction to music.  Maybe I'm just a cold, insensitive person, but for the sake of some interesting conversation, I was curious to hear about whether or not any of you have had such a powerful reaction to music.  I've seen a lot of people make claims towards certain music being tear-inducing, and I was always wondering if they were being sincere about it or if they really couldn't do it anymore than I could and they were just being pseudo-sensitive to score with chicks.

So this thread is useful in two ways.  State whether or not you have cried to music/how much/etc. and also which song(s) prompted this reaction from you.  So we can all share sad songs together and talk about crying and lots of other feminine crap like that.  So my answer is no, how about you?

Depends on what you mean by crying. I've got a little watery-eyed on occasion, but never really had tears like I would to, say, a film.

"Song for a Dead Friend" by Kevin Gilbert.

If you know someone who committed suicide, this song will just rip your heart out.

I'm sorry! :heart

Nah it's a perfectly good question, I just don't really how to answer it. "Yes" and "no" both just don't really seem right. The fault is mine, good sir, not yours.

Maybe not crying, but definitely experienced some water in my eyes because of certain songs.
Listening to a sad song alone doesn't push me to that level, but listening to a sad song combined with feeling sad/emotional because of RL-stuff can surely have that effect.

I think that anyone who has lost a close friend has cried to music. Just the thought of some songs almost brings tears in my eyes (like right now).

Porcupine Tree - Feel So Low

Such a sad song, I didn't cry... but I was about to.
I imagined the story to go more like this.

I was sitting a traffic light blaring Space Dye Vest and next to me in another car was Kevin Moore. And I'll never be open again.

Yeah... some songs that come to mind
Fleetwood Mac - Silver Springs
Rush - The Pass
Dream Theater - Disappear (I don't like DT much anymore, but that song is beautiful)
Queen - The Show Must Go On

And lots of Elton John songs... The Last Song, Tonight, Sorry Seems to Be The Hardest Word...

2 things can do this to me.

1. Cats in the Cradle. I don't know why, but that song makes me tear up so badly just because the story is just so fucking sad.
2. Many of the songs from Rent, especially Seasons of Love, but that is for different reasons other than just the music and the lyrics. I have somewhat of a personal connection with the musical, and that brings some heavy emotions.

Yes.  A couple come to mind:

-Disappear - Almost every time.  There are plenty of lines that very vividly parallel things that we said/done/felt watching my father die of cancer.

-Neal Morse: One (album) - Such a beautifully told story.  Various parts of the album get me from time to time.

Absolutely. It takes a lot more for a song to make me cry (perhaps never, the most it can do is water) if there is no more personal connection to me. Disappear is one for me, and then there's TCOT, which may seem a bit odd, but it's moreso tears of joy. Connected to a rather happy day in my life.

However, if I become desensitized to the song over a short period of time, it'll always be effective, but I must "clear my system" of it for a while before it reaches full effects again.
Ahh, I hit the home button!

Probably Feel So Low by PT when I dramatically tied it to my own love life. I kind of laugh about it now (No, I don't mean to quote the lyrics right there)

That's OK. I'll just automatically assume the songs were selections from the Backstreet Boys' greatest hits album.

I've occasionally teared up during Marillion's "The Last Straw".

I've also did the first time I listened to The Best of Times.
