As confirmed by JR when interviewed by user Mebert78. It's being slightly discussed in the Japan thread, but since it's getting derailed, here's this one.

It sounds like he's written for more than one song. This is going to be a hell of a thing.

Lastly, I asked him if he could give me any details on the new album, songtitles, anything.  He said one thing he could tell me is that Myung wrote lyrics for songs (I believe he said songs, plural -- as in multiple songs).  Of course, we already figured this would happen.  He said next he is recording his keyboard parts.

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES!!!!!

Please edit to include a link to whatever JR said.

Frosthawk

I think I just did a Mike Mangini.

We already have two threads where this has been brought up and another thread (DT11 speculations) that could easily be used for this as well. This thread is pretty pointless imo.

Aniland

People in that thread were saying how it was being derailed. It's not pointless.

John94

I have like a tsunami of emotions right now...ahh..

I think I am looking forward to the album more and more by the day. DT11 WILL be awesome.

Oh you sons of b...

You know what I'm worried about? The first time he contributes lyrically in YEARS is their first album without MP.
...Oh well, I won't speculate about that.

Maybe it's just me lol, but it sounds kinda weird. I mean, he just suddenly decided to contribute lyrics again? And not just for one song, but a few?

I guess "worried" is not the right word, but anyways, forget about it. I guess I'm a little over-thinking stuff XD

Ben_Jamin

No, it shows how unrestrained JMX is now.

KevShmev

I don't think it's weird.  I think it is telling, and reinforces the belief of many who thought Portnoy was behind that silly rule that stopped Myung from contributing lyrics.  If it is true, and Myung lyrics do appear on the next album, I think it is more than reasonable to assume this.

Literally, just AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.

And if you were the one restraining him...cough..MP...cough, why would you do that to such a beastly writer and player?

IdoSC

I hope we'll get a confirmation about JLB lyrics too. And if JLB does write lyrics, I hope it's something among the lines of Disappear/most of the songs in SI, not political lyrics. His political lyrics are great, but right now there are quite a lot of them lol.

Ben_Jamin

Also, does this mean theirs no rules in the studio?

Yep. It's definitely more reasonable to assume.

In fairness to MP, it could also be that DT really want to please their fans with this next album, and JM lyrics is a great way to do that. JP might have been like, "Yo. JM. You probably have some unused lyrics saved. Let's use them". Or, JP maybe didn't want to do all the lyrics, so he was like, "JM, you gotta help me bro".

Lots of possibilities. Me, I would probably go with a combination of the three.

Ben_Jamin

Haha...This just helps my theory that the new album is gonna be as good, if not better, as awake.

orcus116

Maybe, but they've got to show that the departure of Mike has nixed their standard songwriting style.

Like No running by the mixing board?

It just seems in the absence of MP, who was one of the major writers of the band, the other guys have to increase their output because they'll likely produce the same amount of material. I'm not saying what Mike did was bad, we obviously all became fans of the band with him at the helm, but I think this could be a very cool shift.

Mike, like myself, loves the work of Stanley Kubrick who was a very controlling movie director. He was involved in every aspect of his movie's creation. He felt that it often turned out better if there was one guy running the show and that's probably true, if labels and movie studios just let their guys do what they wanted I think things would turn out a lot better. In a band with as many incredible musicians as DT though, if one guy tries to take over, other great artists inevitably get covered up.

I remember JP said something about writing new riffs and demos or something in his Tweeter back in November-December, before they went into the studio. I might be wrong, but if I'm not, that's a sign something's changed.

glaurung

It could just be that he offered to step up to help fill the void left by Mike.

No matter what the cause is, I am excite.

IdoSC

Now all we need is Myung to stay at/above his standard lyrically, and a 10 out of 10 composition, and we might get a LTL 2! :D

Not a word from MP so far about any of this new drummer business.

"DAMMIT HE'LL NEVER SHUT UP NOW."

I believe the words of John Myung are fatal to all those that hear them. Mike Portnoy was the guardian, the protector if you will. Without him, the Myung is free to unleash his madness. Nowhere is safe.

I just Mangini'd my pants.
