CD or JLB on To live Forever
« on: April 30, 2011, 11:03:57 AM »
Well im sure most of you have heard the WDaDRU live dvd, and imo charlie blows away labrie on this song, the phrasing charlie does on some of the verses is much better then labrie.

This.

Live in Tokyo version, '94 studio version, some live version in a bootleg from '04, any live version at '92-'93. James just kicks major asses in this song.

The only things that Charlie is better than JLB at are playing guitar and selling used cars.
Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

His Voice fits this song well, it has a nice warmness compared to LaBries higher sound.

I can't find a single song where I prefer Charlie to James. TLF included.

Mostly prefer JLB. However, the version from '89 on the WDaDR DVD is awesome. Especially during the last verse where Charlie goes "To DIE in the attempt".  :metal

honestly... CD.
I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

While I wasn't any more impressed with JLB's takes on WDADRU than I was with the original CD vocals, in '92-'93 he pretty much owned every single Dominici-era song, including the legendary performance of TLF on the LiT DVD. So, James.
Yeah, I have no idea what the cakeless person in that analogy is meant to be eating. If he's got some sort of cake substitute, it should really have been worked into the narrative at some point. As it stands, the options are:

  • Hoard a cake just to stare blankly into its doughy edifice.
  • Make futile chewing motions with your mouth while starving to death.

Based solely off of the CD version of James and the live Charlie version on WDADRU, I'd say James. Charlie's phrasing really ruined it for me.

I gotta say, I'm just partial to JLB since that's who we hear as the voice of "dream theater".  To me, his voice w/ this song is the way to go.  CD does great, for sure, but it feels more like someone doing a cover as opposed to someone doing the tune.  Just my two cents, though.
