Do you think Mike Mangini will be the drummer for the duration of Dream Theaters career? I am leaning 50/50 on this. I am happy with the choice and think the doc made him already a welcome edition from a fans perspective.

Also I would add, this is not about whether or not MP will ever return. Its about if you think Mangini will go the distance.

My guess is that there's a 75% chance. I don't even want to start thinking about MM potentially quitting DT, to be honest.

50/50

I'd be happy if Mangini stayed until the end. I'd be happy if Portnoy returned. It's all good.  ;D

I'd say he'll be with the band for at least the next 3 albums.

I think he'll stay with them for at least 2 albums. It wouldn't surprise me if Portnoy tried to get back in DT after a few albums.

I see them finishing their man stride with Mangini.

That's not to say that I don't see them hanging it up after a few more albums, only to come back with a slightly different line-up which may or may not include the one they have now. But I see Mangini being the guy until the end, or at least until the "end" barring any future reunion stuff that may happen down the road.

Seeing Mangini's reaction to getting the spot, I would say he's in this thing for good.

Absolutely adorable. "Oh you sons of b..."

Nah but, seriously, they'll finish their career with either of the Mikes, not someone else. And I hope and believe it'll be Mike Mangini.

This poll made me realize that in the back of my head, I've been taking Portnoy coming back somewhere in the future for granted.

I hope this is the final DT lineup, although I said that last time so who knows.  But, like with MP leaving, it's hard for me to imagine how this version of the band doesn't lose a member unless something ugly happens.

What do I think will happen?  I dunno.  I guess 75 percent chance this is the last version based on the poll, although I'm thinking a little more around 80.
Take a chance you may die

Why would they give up instead of inviting, say, Pete Wildoer to replace him?  I was thinking about this yesterday.

I'm about 50/50 on this, but this question ultimately makes me wonder what the band would do if Portnoy actually wanted to come back. I don't think they'd just give Mangini the boot, but then they're also denying Portnoy. Well I guess they've already done that once.

marco will be take the drumming reigns in a bad-ass big bird shirt.
that or portnoy will be back. Hoping Mangini is in for the long-haul though, which it seems as though he will be.

I think that Mike Mangini is going to be with DT for quite some time, perhaps until the very end; I could only foresee him not being there for the rest of days if MP decided to return at some point and DT actually let him, which seems less likely to happen than not.  At any rate, I can safely bet that MM is going to be around for at 3-8 albums at the very least, depending on how long DT continues to operate.

I really hope MP will not come back to DT, not as a permanent member that is. I don't care for one show or something, but things got so ugly (at least publicly) between MP and DT that I really don't want to see it happening.

I'm with you on this.  Though I greatly admire Mike P as a musician (and sometimes as a person), I think DT and him have benefited by going their own ways; it's clear that DT's grown and changed greatly as an entity under these new conditions, at any rate, and I'm sure that the new album and albums to follow will be refreshing.  I do not know how good they will be compared to the classics and highlights of the newer albums, but they will definitely be different, and that's as much as I could ever ask for, to see DT in a constant state of healthy musical development, through whatever new approaches to things are taken.

Voted 25/75. It's probably up to JP at this point as to when DT will pack it in. While Mangini certainly seems committed, we'll have to see how they all do with an album and tour. Plus, MM is 5 years older than JP/JM, so he could conceivably pull a Jon Lord and retire before JP wants to stop making music under the DT moniker. After all, drummers probably get physical problems earlier than guitarists and bassists, too. If it were someone younger like Wildoer, I'd probably vote 50/50 or higher, but the age factor is important.

Between Mangini's age, the fact that fans have yet to react as to how well the DT/MM music works (since we don't have an album), that they haven't had a tour to build/lose personal chemistry, and the fact that there's always the outside chance of an MP reunion, I'd put it at 35% or so.
Yeah, I have no idea what the cakeless person in that analogy is meant to be eating. If he's got some sort of cake substitute, it should really have been worked into the narrative at some point. As it stands, the options are:

  • Hoard a cake just to stare blankly into its doughy edifice.
  • Make futile chewing motions with your mouth while starving to death.

JLB is 4 years older than the Johns, JR is 11 years older. Since they're both in the band for much longer periods than MM and they probably take it a little more for granted than MM who kinda went "Oh s*** I got my dream job", it'd be easier to expect JLB/JR will leave the band before him if anyone will leave the band.

Due to the reason/assumption above, plus other reasons mentioned in other people's posts, I truly believe they'll finish their career in the current lineup.
