As a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

I know this is completely off topic and sorry for derailing (kind of) the thread, but I just can't stand Davie504.
I'm also a bass player and his playing and technique are impressive, he's a GREAT player. BUT, can't stand the kind of videos he does/his online persona (because I don't think he's like that in real life).
It sounds like, "ruk, ruk, ruk, ruk, ruk." Instead of the more pleasing kick drum sound of, "gzarruk, gzarruk, gzarruk, gzarruk."

As Reaper said, no that's not his real life persona. In fact, if you watch his really old videos, you'll see him just playing and that's it. I've seen a few recent videos where he's talked about his online persona, too. So yeah, it's a schtick, and he's not afraid to admit it.

Not the proper ADTOE tour, but those earlier festival shows in Europe (first shows with MM) did :tup

Yeah, I forgot about and wasn't counting the summer festival dates.  But that is valid.  Those were clearly for the ADTOE cycle.

Hard to pick given how consistently awesome he is.

The Alien
The Enemy Inside
Transcending Time
Pale Blue Dot

AND Lost Not Forgotten, which didn't hit me right away but then I saw him do a sick cover at this drumming festival where you can hear him above the backing track (unlike the recorded version): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7u_rLiqX4CE  - I feel like the track is a great example of how he doesn't play over the other instruments, but knows when it's time to groove/sit back and also knows when it's time to whip it out.

Not sure I can pick, but I'll give honorable mention to, I think it's Astonishing, where he simultaneously does 2 different drum rolls on two snares, each with one hand.

DT (my favorites per album, being very unfair to a lot of others):
Lost Not Forgotten
The Enemy Inside
The Gift of Music
S2N
The Alien

Outside DT (being even more unfair):
JLB's Mullmuzzler: His Voice and A Simple Man
JLB: Crucify
Steve Vai: Jibboom (here it seems MM improvised a lot)
Into the Great Divide: Dark Waters

All amazing drum compositions!!

The Alien
Illumination Theory
Surrender to Reason
Outcry
The Astonishing (the full album) which is cheating, yes, but while I can’t pick one specific song from the album to add to this list, the album as a whole has endless amounts of incredible sections of drumming that it deserves the recognition.

My list, though tough to choose from so many great performances (unfortunately sometimes sidetracked due to the sonic issues)

Top 5 Mangini DT performances.

S2N (my personal favorite, wish they played this live)
Illumination Theory (truly a masterpiece, but the studio recording never did it justice)
A View From The Top Of The World (the intro alone is drum composition gold, pure genius from beginning to end)
The Alien (I have a feeling that Mike playing this in a small kit is his way of messing with us)
Pale Blue Dot (Mangini's drum solo lines finding their way into a composition)

Many are awed by Mangini's technique but personally, my admiration for him is how he composes his drum parts.

The song, My Last Farewell, is a great example MM's incredible drumming from that album.
