Just thought I'd post this, Steve Lukather's answer on what he thinks about JP and new drummer Mike on his FB page:

Petrucci and I are pals and Music Man guitar Players. I love John, what a monster musician. I am a big fan. The new Drummer Mike is great cat too. Met him when he was Steve Vai's drummer, nicest guy ever.

Pretty cool :)

Not sure if this has been discussed already, but Mangini is pretty much a cartoon character. He's such a genuinely funny, sensitive guy that he'd be great on a sitcom. Another thing to be excited about!

So I'm curious....I haven't been here in a while...so what's the consensus/assumptions on where mangini is going to help take dream theater?
I mean how will their sound maybe change? I know it won't change a lot...but there will be some differences obviously.

Well, since he (as he stated) had no input during the writing of the new album, the difference might be marginal, at best. There might be some differences in how the drums go with the music, but I don't expect any big changes due to his addition at all. The fact that MP has no input in general moods/structures/arrangements anymore might be a greater factor, regarding an eventual change.

I kind of agree. The things we will probably notice are more varied/creative fills, and more "speed" moments (MM is a former World's Fastest Drummer). But to be honest, I think the biggest impact can be made by the production of the drums; especially how the snare sounds. I would love for the snare to have more of a "crack" like in Metallica's AJFA (not exactly like it but you get my idea). I have some albums recorded in the 70s that have great-sounding snares also. We'll hear how MM's Pearl kit compares to MP's Tama kit in terms of how it sounds.

Genie rocks and i can't wait for the DVD and the new album!  :metal

On a very unrelated note: Isn't it weird that some threads just dies for no reason, all of a sudden nobody posts anymore and the thread goes into coma until one day in the future when someone finds it and revive. Think about all the threads out there in the DTF dungeon that may not ever see light of day again. It makes me sad to think about it.  :'(

Is it me...or does he sort of look like Fred Armisen? Sure, Fred doesn't play drums quite as well as Mike, but the resemblance is a bit...unusual.

Anyways, I just did re-watch the documentary "The Spirit Carries On" just the other night, and I was amazed (once more) at the emotion that MM poured out in the beginning and the end. It was totally clear that they really wanted him, and that he really wanted to join the band. It also astonished me that they really did, literally, get drummers from all over the world (every continent except Africa and Asia, I believe). And ironically, while they picked drummers from many parts of the planet, they chose the one who was, physically and figuratively, closest to home.

-Marc.

I think that was more or less clear..... they always said they wanted a drummer who'd be committed to DT, who else could it have been? Priester from Brazil, Wildoer from Sweden? Come on.... okay, Lang, Minnemann, Roddy and Donati also reside in the US but Roddy said he wouldn't dedicate that much time to DT, Lang is also too busy with his clinics and stuff.... Minnemann was the only one who stirred it up a bit, but maybe he's also told them a thing or two about his mid-term plans....
Long story short, I'm more or less sure they already knew who they'd pick or at least had a general idea and just needed a rehearsal to assure themselves and 6 background actors to have some material for a dvd  :D

But - the really great thing from this documentary is that it contained so much DT songs in the background that I spent several days investigating the songs and this film is in fact what made DT my favorite band, so my rant is in fact unfounded....  :sadpanda:

In terms of background, age, family situation, and yes, geography, they really did choose someone that was basically "one of them".
