Best Drum Parts You KNOW the New Drummer Has Written
« on: April 29, 2011, 03:06:03 PM »
While obviously blown away by his abilities, some of us aren't familiar with his compositions. What are some standout tracks you know The Professor has written for (if JR is the Wizard, MM is the Professor)?

I like Mangini as the professor.

I think he does a great job on EoP.  Alone, In Too Deep, and Drained Particularly stand out.  I'd also say that while Smashed, Lost, and Slightly out of reach aren't particularly sophisticated, they compliment the songs very well.

Honestly yeah, I liked his drumming in the first 3 solo albums of James.

Anyways, I liked this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=um24wnmC3xs
He was also the drummer of Steve Vai, I need to check this out in the future.

Don't expect his writing abilities to be too represented in DT's 11th though...

Here is MM playing with Extreme on David Leterman's show in 1995.  This is one of the 3 songs he recorded with the band and you will get the vibe that he can fit any style while throwing little flourishes in.

Edit:  here is the same song live on the Jon Stewart Show.

This is another song he wrote with them called No Respect on Jon Stewart.

Depends on how well the music's written.  Gavin Harrison doesn't write any of the music for Porcupine Tree, but it allows him room to inject his personality into the drum parts and shape the feel of the track.  Will DT11 be written that way?  We don't know yet, but I hope so.

Bit OT but please change the thread title, bosk made it clear that noone should be posting any info about the drummer's identity in thread titles, not trying to junior mod or anything - just trying to save you from a possible temp ban :)

Back on topic though, I think most of the drumming he has done for james is really solid!

Well, I sure hope so as much as you do, he seems wonderfully talented and DT need this fresh air. But, anyways, I'm sure we'll see his writing and improvising talent already starting this tour.

Hey guys. I'm new here! Greetings from Majorca. After several weeks looking on youtube for some videos of THE DRUMMER, I've found the best one:

Yeah, Neil Peart already has the nickname the professor, so you're going to have to give Mangini a new pet name. :p

Hmmm.....

The Mangina?
"All great works are prepared in the desert, including the redemption of the world. The precursors, the followers, the Master Himself, all obeyed or have to obey one and the same law. Prophets, apostles, preachers, martyrs, pioneers of knowledge, inspired artists in every art, ordinary men and the Man-God, all pay tribute to loneliness, to the life of silence, to the night." - A. G. Sertillanges

The Professor is better.

This band now consists of:

a pirate, a professor, a wizard, a bear, and a ninja.

someone needs to assign them role-playing skill levels, but with musical connotations. Then design some character cards

While looking at the some of the fantastic clips posted here, I stumbled onto this one (also with MM.... just not a performance video as such).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w8Gxut0odyc&feature=related

What really amazed me was from about 4:15 on. I've played drums most of my life and never imagined that the snare head (especially as tightly as it is usually tuned compared to the other drums) reacted to such extremes. The cymbal strike really amazed me as well!

Was I the only one to notice that Petrucci is not that chubby anymore?
He's more like Jesus again, rather than a bear.

Besides, it's not like nobody else has been called a bear or a wizard before. :P

The Professor is just fine as far as I'm concerned!
