17:36 of the first episode... new Dream Theater music?
« on: April 25, 2011, 03:37:50 PM »
I'm making this new thread since it's a different topic than the drummer thread; did anybody notice the new music that Mangini played with them at 17:36? How wonderful is that?

I dunno, these auditions were back in, what, October? November? Sometime around then and WAY before they entered the studio. Could just be riff ideas that they came up with purely for the auditions.

That's true. It had such a studio-sounding vibe to it I thought, but who knows. Man this whole thing is exciting.

I don't think so. As I said in the other thread, I think it was a constructed riff just to test the drummer's ability to jam and improvise to weird time signatures. You can see in MM's face the ridiculousness of the time signatures (right before JR suggest to write down the time signatures, you see the "you guys are crazy" smile on MM's face).
I totally love the "professor glasses" that MM whips out :lol

It wasn't actually that weird at all, just 9/8, 4/4, 9/8. But still a little confusing when it's just been sprung on you! :lol

I'm not a skilled musician but, doesn't that depend on the patterns, too? 4/4 is probably the simplest signature but it can be very complex depending on the context, I recall "The Black Page" being in 4/4.

Music itself is the only complex thing. Time signatures serve only for the rhythm to make mathematical sense.

I hope they do a riff like that, though. Kinda reminded me of that first heavy riff in watershed, where it kinda feels out of time in a really creepy way. Love that stuff.

It wasn't actually that weird at all, just 9/8, 4/4, 9/8.

I think that was just the start of the pattern: there was a lot more to it. Otherwise Rudess wouldn't have suggested MM write it down.

4/4 is probably the simplest signature but it can be very complex depending on the context, I recall "The Black Page" being in 4/4.

Yes, indeed. A major reason of why The Black Page is so "statistically dense" (in FZ's words) is because of crazy polyrhythms. See: https://www.vai.com/LittleBlackDots/tempomental.html

It's not just the time signatures though.  The riff itself is just... bizarre.  It's really hard to hear it and feel like tension's building in one moment and releasing in another.  But that's why they threw it at the drummers.  When you hear Mangini play it, the way he organizes the kick and snare hits allows you listen to the riff.  A kick in a short moment of silence tells you it's pulsing one way, and then the snare tells you it's going another.  It goes from a very random sounding collection of notes and harmonics to something that has aesthetic quality.

17:36?! I thought the documentary that's been released so far is only 3 minutes long or something.

I don't think that it's "new DT". It's just a riff, just some jamming that probably has been prepared for the auditions. I really don't know what I should think of the mindset that this riff might have ended up on the new album.
... And you ask me: "Where's my hairspray?"

I wouldn't mind crazy riffs like that on the album, but this one sounded a bit generic just for the jam session.

I loved Mangini's face when Jordan was saying it's 9 then 4 and he was like  :| then Jordan says "You wanna write this down?" then he was like  :D  :lol

Just watched the episode for the third time. Mangini is incredible. I love the beginning of The Dance of eternity, there's that bit where he only plays with his right hand - what a show-off.  :lol

I actually found it somewhat weird they asked him to play TDOE. With the crazy arrangement, I thought it would be too obvious.

I thought it was more like, Mangini thinking "Okay, 9, 4, 9"

- "You wanna write this down?"

(thinking:) "Yeah, that prolly looks professional"

"Yeah of course"

I bet Mangini could follow a rhythm like that after a single listen, really.

He doesn't need to write that shit down, that's simple for him.  I think he just thought he better respond like that because Jordan expected and suggested that he did.

...

When you audition for a band, you want to look as confident and capable as possible.  Yeah, Mangini could probably do it without writing it down, but it would be far more clumsy and unprofessional.  If he could really just nail it without writing it down, do you really think he'd waste his time and the band's time with that?

Well, of course he didn't know what there was to come. And neither do we. But to write down a 9/8 4/4 9/8 section is not neccesary.
