The single most important event of prog history..

.. was Neal Morse converting to Christianity.

I've been deeply immersing myself in all of his Christian Progressive Rock albums over the past few months, and I really can't describe how amazing they are. Neal Morse is a genius in the word's most brilliant sense.

I wouldn't go that far, but Neal is definitely a super talented guy who has written some great music, with Spock's Beard, Transatlantic, and on his own.

We can of course never know if his music after becoming a born-again in 2002 would be as good as it has been, but I strongly believe he has found a lot of inspiration in his faith. Now I'm not religious in any way, but I actually find the Christian lyrics very fitting. I mean, what's more epic than a prog album with lyrics about the creation of the world and God's relationship with man? His lyrics in general are far from preachy and clichéd like so many Christian bands. We have Testimony, concerning Neal's conversion, One, which is the genesis story, and Sola Scriptura, a concept album about the life of Martin Luther (which is one of the most original concept ideas I can think of). I guess Lifeline is the most generic Christian Rock album, not being a concept album like the rest of them. But then it has So Many Roads, which has become my all time favorite song.

The biggest event was the Hammond organ which in 1934 was made and mostly used in churches.  Thank god (pun intended) that Jazz and theorigins of Prog rock picked up on this great instrument.

Neal's stuff is great, but I wouldn't call any of his albums "masterpieces", ya know?  They are just very fun to listen to.  Except Testimony, that's probably a masterpiece.

Maybe I'm still pining about how horrible Lifeline was.  Wow, what an awful album.

Still, I understand the sentiment of the OP...but I would say, rather, that is the best event in Neal Morse's prog contributions. His solo stuff slays SB and TA, IMHO. Then again, I am a NM fanboy, so...

Same here, and I don't think it's close.  Honestly, while Neal has a handful of great records with Spock's Beard and on his own (and many more that range from good to very good), the three Transatlantic records are by far the best three records he has been involved with, IMO.

The most important event would be In The Court of the Crimson King... but yeah, Close to the Edge is probably in the top 5 events.
