8. Peter Steele (Type O Negative)
LOVIN' YOU IS LIKE LOVIN' THE DEAD. LOVIN' YOU IS LIKE LOVIN' THE DEAD. LOVIN' YOU IS LIKE LOVIN' THE D--Anyway, Peter Steele is a legendary vocalist among gothic metal fans. Well, maybe not, but he should be. Among Type O Negative's signature sounds, Steele's voice stands out the most. His baritone never feel out of place, and the only enhance the sludgy, sensuous, keyboard-tinged music that flows from the hands of these 4 men. On a track like Haunted, for example, he hits a note so low you'll wonder if Peter is human at all. He can moan, whisper, creep--all with his own, singular vocals. They're perfect for both TON's super cereal and humorous moments. No one else will ever sound like him, and his death has stuck with me even after a whole year. RIP
7. Daniel Gildenlow (Pain of Salvation)
Love him or hate him, you can't deny the incredible vocal range of Daniel Gildenlow. Honestly, he's what makes Pain of Salvation for me, based on the mere fact that he sings with so much passion and emotion. I can count quite a few moments during albums that this man has made me choke up, the most prominent being the title track to The Perfect Element ("Now he is dressing this naked floor... with his flesh and blood..." so on). The vocal style itself is difficult to describe. It's operatic and high (usually), but not in a cheesy power metal-esque way at all. He took awhile to grow on me, but after several tries, I was completely enveloped by his moving, passionate, gorgeous vocal harmonies that could never possibly be replicated by anyone else. Sadly, I rarely listen to PoS anymore, but when I do, Gildenlow always captivates me.
6. Mikael Akerfeldt (Opeth)
A man that needs no introduction, Mikael Akerfeldt will go down in history as one of the greatest metal vocalists ever. His demonic roars from hell and soulful clean singing grab the listener by the balls and don't let go until the very end of the song/album. He never lets his passion slip--he can sound angry, sad, and brooding all within one sing, an example being When. While some metal vocalists are strong in one style and extremely lacking in the other, Mikael not only holds up well in both departments, he is
excellent, and one of Opeth's many, many, many strong suits.
