Sick of tornadoes
« on: April 22, 2011, 11:37:50 PM »
Since New Year's Eve, the St. Louis area and/or the cities right around us have literally have at least 10 major tornado warnings, many of which have caused major damage.  The one on NYE wreaked major havoc about 10 minutes from where I live (and caused numerous fatalities), we had a scary one just miss our county Tuesday night, and North St. Louis and St. Charles got blasted badly tonight with a tornado.  Power lines were down on the interstate, there are nearly 50K power outages, and our airport is closed down now because one of the terminals nearly got destroyed.

I know what some are thinking: big deal, it is just a few tornadoes, but it seems like we can't go a week nowadays without a major tornado warning.  It is ridiculous.  I can't remember ever having a season nearly this bad in regards to storms and tornadoes since I've been alive.

And it is supposed to rain a lot in the next few days, with more storms a-coming.  Joyous. :tdwn :tdwn

My mom called me and told me about it all, she said a tornado touched down pretty close to her house, and she lives in a suburb that isn't exactly tornado friendly.

I'm fairly unfazed by tornado warnings, having lived in Tornado Alley all my life. That said, that could probably put me in even more danger for disregarding legitimate warnings.

But yeah. Try enduring a night like the May 3rd tornadoes.

No offense meant by this: But why do people live there with this kind of a risk? I don't get it...

YES I KNOW THERES A BUNCH OF REASONS BUT SERIOUSLY. And not everyone has the ability to move away etc etc

Seriously, hope you're OK though.

I know what you mean, Kev.  It's been a busy few months.  About two weeks ago, we had a tornado touch down about 2 miles from my house, and last weekend we had 70 tornado sightings in North Carolina, and the eastern part of the state has been declared a disaster area.

I wish it would calm down, and I'm sure it will...just in time for hurricane season.

It's been pretty bad recently. Last year, we had an EF4 that totally crushed a high school 2 days before graduation.

So, reports are that:

-Bridgeton (which is in North St. Louis) did get hit with an EF4 last night.
-That was the first EF4 in the St. Louis area sine 1967.

However, and this is good news, warnings were on television 34 minutes before it actually hit, so pretty much everyone was able to get to safety.  As of now, there are zero reported fatalities as a result of last night's storm, which is incredible when you see pictures of the devastation.

Up here in N.E I've only seen 1 in my lifetime and the path of destruction seemed fake to me.  My mind didn't want to register the straight line of destruction it did.  I do not envy those in Tornado Alley.

More storms are expected in the next two days, with Monday possibly bringing more tornadoes.  Yippee.

We're supposed to get some too, but our weathermen tend to be dipshits. 80% chance of precipitation today, and we got nothing. It keeps spawning east of me and heading towards you.

I'm ready for a good storm, sans the tornadoes.

Well, the crazy storms and tornadoes stayed south today (they were forecasted to be hitting us again today), which was good for St. Louis, but Arkansas got slammed with them hard, and flooding is starting to get bad in parts of southern Missouri (among elsewhere).  To hell with all of this nonsense. :tdwn :tdwn

Yeah, I was in St. Louis for Easter visiting family, and they kept talking about how nuts it was that nobody died given the damage.

I'm pretty surprised the KC area hasn't had any yet. I've lived here just about my entire life, mostly in rural areas, and still I've never seen a tornado.

It really depends on your interests. Storm chasers live for seeing a tornado, while most other people hope they never do. I'm somewhere in the middle. I love watching the big storms develop on radar, as long as they stay the hell away from me.

EDIT: Good lord, it looks like Arkansas is going to get hit again today.

I'm not far from a tornado, exciting. People I go to school with have already been posting pictures on Facebook of funnel clouds they've seen.

We've been lucky in St. Louis since last Friday, as the crazy storms and tornadoes have missed us, but those poor people down south are getting annihilated.  Arkansas got it bad the other day, and Alabama, Mississippi and Georgia all reportedly took it on the chin tonight.  Many are already declared dead, and with many missing, the death toll will likely go up. :(

What is currently happening is beyond the scope of anything seen. The pictures I saw this morning made my eyes pop out. Just devastating. :omg:

Lets hope this does not continue. As if things arent bad enough these days without entire cities being wiped out.
