Compilation for my dad
« on: April 20, 2011, 11:13:54 AM »
Hehe, this could be fun.
Fact is that I'll be spending some time (about 3 hours) in MY car with my dad. He despises rock music (is too loud, has guitars and drums, singers can't sing...). But as it's my car, he will have to listen to my stuff.

Sooo: can you think of any prog music that he might like? I have some songs in mind, but I'd love to hear your opinion, DTF. GO!

Keep prog alive - see it live!

This.

It's kind of hard to make a playlist when we don't have anything to compare it to.
Cole: "Ow I just got hit in the balls"
Me: "How?"
Cole: "Well you know when you try to scratch your balls, and you scratch too hard?
I'll admit sometimes I want to listen to Dragonforce.

If he thinks the singers can't sing, give him a healthy dose of Kansas, Queen, Peter Gabriel and ELP.  Obviously, go with the catchier, shorter songs by Kansas and ELP.  If he thinks rock music is too loud, he might dig mellow, acoustic-driven stuff like "Dust in the Wind," "From the Beginning," "'39," "Solsbury Hill," "Still...You Turn Me On" and "Hold On."

Well, he loves classical music (Anna Netrebko, classical composers like Mozart or Bach) and what we call Volksmusik (waltzes, polkas, marches etc.).

Definitely some ELP then. Would be a nice and easier transition for him.

Queen is an excellent suggestion

Maybe something from Isildurs Bane - MIND Vol 1, classical "fusion" -- i.e., puts the symphonic into symphonic prog.

But this is the Village Vanguard sessions. SERIOUSLY epic. An epic 4 and a half hours of live performances. Insane.

Harmonium hands down. They have no drumming, and the guitar is always acoustic. That is if he's okay with music not in English.
