Peter:

First, I'm honoured to have the opportunity to talk to one of the best drummers in the world. My question is: all of you seven used the same drum kit to audition, but there are some differences in the different sequences of the trailer video. Were you been able to customize that kit for your own best?

Thank you very much for your time.

All the best.

Andres.

Peter?

Try not to push it too hard, bud. Once is enough. :lol

Yeah... Maybe you're right. Thanks anyway.

 :lol No worries!

All drummers had enough time to set up the kit how they wanted it. Yes, we did use the same kit and there were plenty of toms, stands etc. and also some stuff that we individually asked for. The same goes for cymbals but I brought some special stacks and other specific cymbals with me. I also brought my twin kick pedal.

A "fun" thing is that I was the only drummer that used just one bass drum with twin pedals. All the others used two bass drums. I've never used double bass drums as that would not fit in my car!  :D  JR actually asked me how I was able to play their songs with just one kick drum when I was setting up. I said that I had a really fast right foot, ha ha ha...  :rollin  He looked at me very surpised then I said I use a twin pedal.  ;)

Thank you very much for your reply Peter.

PS: about the one kick drum thing, I heard that Nicko Mc Brain do that. He doesn't have a twin pedal but a really fast right (bare)foot. Not enough for DT of course but still really impressive.

Yeah, I would have thought more people knew about double bass pedals.  That's what I (and many others) use as well since I don't really want to spend the extra money or use up extra space for a second bass drum.

I didn't know about those heel-toe pedals though.  That is pretty interesting.

that's the same reason why i used the twin pedals instead of a double bass

looks like you just gave us a sneak preview of your audition there, Peter.  :tup

Yeah, some guys are really fast.  Leonard Haze, the original drummer of '80s band Y&T, had an incredibly fast right foot as well.  In the '70s and early '80s, it was extremely rare for guys to use double bass.  A few did, but it was not common.  Leonard was infamously fast and played a lot of stuff with one foot that sounded like double bass.  There is a pretty infamous string of backstage fights between Y&T and Van Halen during that time, and Leonard and Eddie were often at the center of them.  One time, Eddie turned on his own bandmate, Alex, and started going off on him about not being as fast as Leonard.  :lol  Good times...

There is only one person I know for certain is not the choice.  The other six...who knows?  :x

Gotta be Roddy, right? Donati too, since there's that scheduling conflict with him and DT. I'd say Minnemann's pretty unlikely as well. The other four, I don't really know.

Complete speculation on my part here, but one thing I found interesting: Petrucci seems to be the guy giving lots of feedback on the auditions (he was the one who responded to Mangini, discussed a lot about what they were looking for, etc.), and yet, we saw in the preview that it's LaBrie who ultimately "welcomes the drummer to the family."

That leads me to believe the drummer is somebody who's closest connection to the band is with JLB, which narrows it to Mangini, and, of course, our good friend Wildoer.

Not that my logic is airtight, but along with all the Mangini speculation that's already been done, and the fact that Wildoer's posting here now...

There's also the whole primacy and latency effect thing--since Mangini auditioned first and Wildoer last, that means those two were most likely to make the biggest impressions, all else equal, since people tend to remember what they saw first and last the most.

Right now, I'd rank it like this, from most to least likely.

Mangini
Wildoer
Priester
Lang
Minnemann
Donati
Roddy

In 40-60 minutes, my mind will likely change, I'm sure.
Yeah, I have no idea what the cakeless person in that analogy is meant to be eating. If he's got some sort of cake substitute, it should really have been worked into the narrative at some point. As it stands, the options are:

Unfortunately, I can't really say much more.  I was not told who it is.  But I was told that one person is definitely NOT it, and I haven't asked for any more detail than that.  But speaking of asking things...

@Peter:  So...did the band ask whether or not you were comfortable playing covers?  If so, did they happen to throw out any particular albums from other bands that they, hypothetically, might want to cover in the future?

Nicko's right foot isn't all that great. The quick kicks you hear on "Face in the Sand" and "Ghost of Navigators" are fixed with Pro-Tools because Nicko couldn't get it right!

For the guys who can't watch it due to YouTube country restrictions or whatever, I'll upload the 720p version to megaupload soon after it has been released as I did with Episode 1.

Nicko said that Face in the sand is the only Iron Maiden song where he used a double bass pedal.

Man, I keep reloading RR's YT channel just in case they put the vid up early, haha. Also skipping class just for the chance to see the vid as soon as it comes out  ;D.

Quite far from it, in fact. My day is going to be pretty much devoted to Dream Theater. Friday as well, assuming that's when Part 3 drops.

Yeah, not cool that I have to wait until after work again today.  Even worse, I'm going camping in the middle of NOWHERE on Friday morning.  Assuming the final episode is Friday, I won't find anything out until Sunday night when I come back.

Already watching it.

Derek Roddy's not exciting me too much, but he seems pretty cool. Fairly sure he's not got it, though.

Liking Jordan's audition riff, though. That's a brilliant test.

Lang was slightly less impressive than Mangini. From the discussions, it seems like he shot a bit to high and got lost a couple times.

Agreed. And that riff was really groovy, the kind of classic-rock/Deep Purple thing I would like them to do more.
