I for one am interested in the documentary, but the actual announcement ... eh.

rumborak

I totally agree. In fact, I think this documentary, if done well, will more than make up for the last 6+ months of "name the damn drummer already..." angst. And if it helps us get primed for the album release, so much the better.

CrimsonSunrise, the unfinished projects MP wanted to finish sounds like the AA suite being played live, and maybe TBoT live.

I agree with those two.  I was thinking though, some kind of actual production project.  Something he had invested time and money into, with the blessing of the band, that he wanted to complete to possibly get a financial return on.

Didn't he say he was planning on/working on a new batch of ytsejamrecords releases?

It's good to have you on board Peter!

Anyways, although Peter was my original choice, after seeing the video, I would love Marco also. I like his attitude and playing style quite a bit.

Unless I am completely mistaken about human psychology, those two projects will never happen. First of all, getting 4 guys who will learn the AA suite from beginning to end would be a major financial commitment for MP, and he would never be able to get the money back; where would he show it?
Second of all, Mike Portnoy playing a full hour of Dream Theater songs would be weeeiird. It would make him look as if he's clinging to the past.
TBOT has a bit of a better chance, but once again, I think MP will try to steer away from DT-related stuff for a while.

The full suite would be too much to play while he's not in DT... but if there's ever a reunion in 5-10 years, then I hope they'd play the full AA suite.

A bit off-topic, but I just paused the video just before James says "welcome you to the family" and Myung is actually smiling! It seems like that was a very very special moment for the DT guys.
You could say it was "especially special."

The more I think about it , the more into this doc thing I am. I don't know of any other lineup change that's ever been handled quite like this. It seem these guys have come up with a very creative idea. I think this may be a fun thing. I only wish a version would come out that's easy to watch. I don't want to have to upgrade my internet speed for this.

Another positive out of this, is that in the past MP was the driving force for fan related stuff.  Now, we're seeing the others getting involved... :tup

Peter, which drum fill would you say it's your favourite in the history of rock/metal?

You know what would be cool, though? An MP tour, where MP gets a group of guys together to play stuff from Dream Theater, Liquid Tension, Transatlantic, his newer projects and his cover stuff. And, I mean, I think it theoretically could happen. I imagine Mike going out with, say, a group like Daniel Gildenlow and Derek Sherinian. Would be sweet.

That would be pretty sweet... but in that case I don't want only DT related tunes being played.

On a serious note, I thought John Macaluso would audition. A little surprised he didn't. And just imagine if Bobby Jarzombek had!

It's interesting, but it's a shame that the Mike responses are all recycled footage. I guess he didn't want to talk or, less awesome, they just didn't ask.

Too much background music, but pretty nifty aside from that!

I am LOVING Mike Mangini. He's stellar on ANTR. Only at the 15 minute mark so far, though.
