American Idol James Durbin sings 'Heavy Metal'
« on: April 13, 2011, 09:58:15 PM »
With guest appearance by Zakk Wylde.

I have to say, this is not half bad. I would love to see more hard rock/metal songs brought onto this show. It would definitely peak my interests again.

I like this Durbin guys voice. Not half bad, and sung Heavy Metal very well.

Yea man, this guys not too bad!  That takes some serious balls to stand up on that table right in front of Steven Tyler and nail a crazy high note...  I'm definitely impressed with his confidence.  I agree... there should be more metal on that show.

It seems like metal is more accepted on the European versions of the American Idol thing... Here's a kid singing some Skidrow:

I was watching this last night and about shit.  When they said he was goinna do the title track to the movie "Heavy Metal", I was all "YES, HE'S DOING HAGAR!!!!!!!!!!"  Great version and walking out with ZW just ramped up the intensity 1000x.  Amazing.

The kid  has range and can sing many styles but it's great to hear him do metal.  He did Judas Priest before too.

My one complaint it the  house band on AI has isn't versatile with all styles of music.

The American Idol stage really does not work for metal.

Joining a band will likely assure that you toil away in obscurity for a really long time, possibly forever.  Appearing on American Idol lets millions of people see what you can do.  Big difference.

This is a good thing Steven joined AI. Since he began they're playing more metal.

But not a single one of them offers even the remotest amount of negative criticism now.  It's ridiculous.

Nope.  Last season was his last.  It's now Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez, and Steven Tyler.

Tyler is awesome.  The most off the wall f*cking things come out of his mouth.  He's like the leering old man that always has something unintelligible, but hilarious to say.

Its cool Simons gone because he was just a critic who seemed to only judge their technical ability. The new ones see their heart and technicality in their voice, in tone and how well they control it.

Simon was the only one who ever said anything worthwhile. The others just gloss over all the problems.

No, they don't.  What matters is which contestant appeals to the teenage girls who are doing 900% of the voting.

Terrible song though. Not one of Sammy's best. But it's good to see some Hard Rock on Idol.

So wait, no one's giving any negative criticism on Idol anymore?  What's the point of having judges then?

As for the actual performance, it started off meh but got way better as it went on.  The Priest cover was cool as well.

Well, they are here and there, but for the most part, you'd think it was all rainbows and unicorns and shit.  Not often that there's much negative said.  At least it doesn't seem that way.  Plenty of people I know have said the same.

I've been out of the Idol loop for a few years, but I always liked how objective Simon was, and how he would watch the performances again after the show to hear what people at home heard and to get a second opinion.  It showed that he was paying attention, too.  On the results show he would sometimes say "I take this back," or "I can see why people like you," etc. etc.

Oh well, maybe X Factor will be better?

Simon was objective but damn if he didn't have the pulse on a person because he didn't like a song they picked and they killed it.  Like Coz said, the worst they say now is a slap on the wrist compared to Simon's slap in the face style.

Simon gets a  :tdwn from me because during Queen night, Chris Daughtry sang "Innuendo", and Simon proceeded to say that was a awful song.

1 - How poor is Zakk Wylde to agree to appear on such a show?
2 - Steven Tyler is a regular!!!
3 - The kid has good voice.
4 - I dunno if she's a regular but this is Jennifer Lopez natural habitat.
I wouldn't want somebody with 18 kids to mow my damn lawn, based on a longstanding bias I have against crazy fucks.

I remember that actually. One of the few times I ever watched the show because I love Queen. I was amazed someone covered that song, and I thought the performance was great. But after Simon's comments, I major facepalmed and haven't watched the show since.

I'm sure he's doing pretty well.  But hey, a gig is a gig, especially one where you will be seen by 30 million people.
Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

It's exposure.  And good exposure.  Hell, Zakk and BLS opened for my Kiss tribute band, Cold Gin once.  When you have a chance to play, jump on it.

I dont mind that Zakk was there at all, good exposure

But the judges need a wake up call...Randy Jackson saying Zakk is playing with Ozzy, not once but multiple times.....trying way to hard to sound hip

I don't really like Durbin's voice. His song choices are usually pretty good but as an overall entertainer the only reason he stands out is that he's the only real "rocker" by default. A lot of stuff he does on stage comes across as corny. Remove Wylde from that performance and it instantly becomes pretty mediocre.
