Your Favourite Bass Line?
« on: April 11, 2011, 06:16:26 PM »
Fairly straightforward question. What's your favourite?

For me, it's gotta be the bass line from "Roundabout" by Yes. My god is it ever awesome  :metal

Not really a riff, but the little bass lick in PF's The Thin Ice right before the ooohs.
"All great works are prepared in the desert, including the redemption of the world. The precursors, the followers, the Master Himself, all obeyed or have to obey one and the same law. Prophets, apostles, preachers, martyrs, pioneers of knowledge, inspired artists in every art, ordinary men and the Man-God, all pay tribute to loneliness, to the life of silence, to the night." - A. Aside from the "Roundabout" and every Rush songs mentions, which I second, third or whatever :P, I'll take:

Peter Gabriel - "Big Time" (Tony Levin)
The Who - "The Real Me" (John Entwistle)
Led Zeppelin - "Immigrant Song" (John Paul Jones)
U2 - "Until the End of the World (Adam Clayton)
Radiohead - "The National Anthem" (Thom Yorke with a rare bass appearance)

Fleetwood Mac - The Chain (in the middle, before the guitar solo)
Porcupine Tree - Hatesong
Muse - Hysteria
Radiohead - Paranoid Android (around the middle)
Karnivool - Simple Boy
Dream Theater - Medicate me
Led Zeppelin - Dazed and Confused
Opeth - Baying of the Hounds (during the middle part. It's only the root note and the octave, really simple but effective).

and two subsequent songs from Metallica's 'The Black Album': 'The God that Failed' and 'My Friend of Misery'. Jason's absence from AJFA was kind of redeemed here.
Not 'Down To F***', but 'Dream Theater Forums' .

Jason actually laid down some above decent bass tracks for that album. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nvx1M4-A6lE here's the title track's original isolated bass recording as an example.
dat tone

I still have 5 tracks of that album remixed with the original bass guitar, all DIY by me. Was really fun making those at the time.
Blackened
...And Justice For All
One
The Shortest Straw
Dyers Eve

K.A. I - Magma
Evermore - Transatlantic
Elohim's Voyage - Weidorje
Caution Congregates and Forms A Storm - Birds and Buildings

Really hard between those four. K.A. I is actually many basslines, but each one is amazing as shit. Evermore is just cool sounding. Elohim's Voyage is pretty much the same basic structure for 14 minutes of the 16 and a half minute song, but holy shit does it go by fast. And it's so awesome, and the bass has this fuzzy awesome sound and it's awesome. CCaFaS I'm referring to the middle section, although it's more of a bass solo it's still kickass.

Pretty much any Dan Briggs Between The Buried & Me bass bits. Most notably on TGM though.

End of Blinded in Chains, intro to The Wicked End and Streets by A7X.

Can I count New Millennium? So much Myung work comes to mind...

Anything off LD 50.

Blackwater Park (the song) has some awesome bits as well.

Entwistle has too many awesome bass lines to list them all, but "The Real One" is the first one that came to mind.  It reminds me of "Roundabout," in that it is so overpowering, it is almost like the bass line is strangling you.

Fleetwood Mac - The Chain (in the middle, before the guitar solo)

Did you ever notice how you can tell that they had old f*cked up strings on his bass?  Sounds like they'd been on there for years.  He hits that last E note in the riff and it dies away almost instantly.  :lol

I like the bass line in Zep's "Ramble On".  Also, I dig pretty much anything Billy Sheehan does.  Yes, he may wildly overplay by some peoples' standarads, but I love his playing.  Old Talas stuff like King of the World or Hit and Run were great, and Mr. Big stuff, like Merciless or Rock and Roll Over.  I just love the stuff he does.
