Home speakers.
« on: March 31, 2011, 08:13:23 PM »
So, I has a question. I have been using a shitty amp as a speaker for the last 2 years or so. It is starting to go and I was thinking about getting a real sound system in my room. Obviously not too too expensive, but something that is cool and can rock the house. Anybody got any ideas?

How much are you willing to spend on it? I'm guessing between $50-$100 maybe?

Excuse my ignorance. What is the point of a receiver?

It's a home theater receiver. It has a built in amp with 100 watts per channel and it's 5.1.

The good thing about buying it is I can put together a home theater whenever I decide to get my own apartment.

Excuse my ignorance. What is the point of a receiver?

You plug everything that you might want to come out of the speakers into the receiver. Then the speakers only have to be plugged into the receiver. I don't actually own one, so I'm sure they do other things but that is the main function.

"Whether you're building a system capable of delivering full-on home theater thrills, or one that's intended exclusively for listening to music, you'll find that your receiver is a crucial component.

The receiver handles a wide variety of tasks. It powers your speakers, tunes in FM and AM radio stations, provides convenient switching between audio/video components, and lets you tailor the sound of your system to suit your room and preferences. Home theater receivers also provide the decoding that lets you enjoy movies, TV shows, music, and even video games in enveloping surround sound."

Get a 5.1 system. It's definitely the way to go if you're looking for a serious sound system, especially with all of the albums that have been getting 5.1 releases lately (although I don't think you really like most of the bands that are doing them  :lol).

I have a 7.1 system that cost around 600.... It's cool, but honestly people don't really do much for 7.1 so the extra two speakers aren't utilized for special 5.1 mixes. Kind of a waste, but it's a complete surround sound experience when you're listening to regular cds/records/whatever.

Yeah, definitely get a 5.1 setup if you're looking to spend as much as $350. If you want someone to suggest things to you, I'll help.

Don't buy one of their stupid bundles. If you want a good system, you should probably buy everything separate.

I read the title as if it was "Homo Speakers". Then I realized.

OK back to lurking the thread.

In my experience, you don't get your money's worth.

For Cole though, he may want to get one since he doesn't really know what he's doing.

I'm also not looking for anything fancy. I want surround sound speakers to blast music with. Not sure if that helps, but it is true.

The best way to do it is just google around. If you see a system that catches your eye, look at reviews. Most of the time, it'll give you an idea of what you'll be getting. There will be some people who don't really have any experience with sound systems, but usually the highest rated reviews will have a knowledgeable opinion.

5.1 refers to the total number of speakers.
two in front on the sides.
one center
two behind you on the sides
.1 refers usually to the subwoofer.

as mentioned your reciever\amplifier is a hub. Sound from the television, or cd\mp3 player, or DVD player that you want amplified loud out of the speakers goes through the reciver\amplifier using an assortment of overpriced cables.

as "components" (things that you plug into the receiver) have become more complex and computer~ish the receivers have become smarter themselves. In my experience, if you are restrained by prices, you can afford to be cheap on one of the two. Either cheap amp. Or you can cheap on speakers. One good quality of those two will USUALLY and sufficiently pick up the slack for the other.
Take care everyone - Bet you all didn't even notice I was gone.

Happy Lives to you all.
