In Retrospect: Album of the Year 2000 poll
« on: March 21, 2011, 12:56:42 PM »
One of the frustrating things about doing the Album of the Year immediately the following year is that even though I think I do a good job keeping up with new music, sometimes new bands slip by or I don't have the money to buy albums immediately.  What I'd like to do is do an album of the year for past years.  It will be run slightly different than the way Nick does it, but each year will consist of three rounds.  I'll start with 2000 and work up to 2010, and if its popular enough, I'll work backwards from 1999.

The first round is the nomination round.  You don't have to rank them, and ranking them won't give your top album more points.  Simply list your five favorite albums released in 2000.  The 10 albums that get the most nominations move on to the next round, so don't pass over an album just because someone else nominated it.  Nomination cut off will be Monday night approx 9 pm EDT.

DTVT's albums:

Transatlantic - SMPTe
Spock's Beard - V
Pain of Salvation - TPE Pt. 1
Iron Maiden - Brave New World
Enchant - Juggling 9 or Dropping 10

This is a great idea!  That is so true that some albums you might not hear until years later, not to mention that some albums age really well and some do not.  Anyway, my top five:

The Flower Kings - Space Revolver
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven
Porcupine Tree - Lightbulb Sun
Radiohead - Kid A
Transatlantic - SMPTe

Pretty much what Kev said.
I also agree with Kev on these:

*Porcupine Tree - Lightbulb Sun
*Radiohead - Kid A
*Godspeed You Black Emperor! - Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven

I'll also add:

*Ulver - Perdition City
*Linkin Park - Hybrid Theory

Fixed so its only 5.

Lightbulb Sun wins forever.  Next year, please.

EDIT: here are some others, I guess.

Radiohead-Kid A
Spock's Beard-V
Iron Maiden-Brave New World

Don't really have anything else from that year, I think.

Pain of Salvation - The Perfect Element
Ulver - Perdition City

Radiohead - Kid A

Some that just barely missed making my list: PJ Harvey's Is This Desire?, Elliott Smith's Figure 8, A Perfect Circle's Mer De Noms, and Deftones' White Pony.

Spock's Beard - V

I hated having to leave that off of my list, but I like all of the ones I listed better, so it barely missed the cut.

2000 also saw really good albums by Kansas, Death Cab, Ayreon, Isis, No-Man, King Crimson, Ozric Tentacles, U2, etc.

Radiohead - Kid A
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Lift Your Skinny Fists like Antennas to Heaven

The only two choices really, in terms of cultural impact and generally deserving the title, as much as I love LBS and Perdition City.

Yeah, I'm hoping it goes to one of those, they deserve it the most, but it's going to go to Lightbulb Sun without question :lol

I feel like for this kind of thing you have to pick an album that really defined the year it came out in. Yeah, Perdition City and LBS are amazing albums, but Kid A and Lift Your Skinny Fists just define 2000 so much more in my eyes. It's the reason that Kid A would top, or come near the top of, my album of the decade list, despite not being in my top 10 personal favourites.

Radiohead - Kid A (best of decade perhaps?)
Porcupine Tree - Lightbulb Sun
Iron Maiden - Brave New World
Doves - Lost Souls
Coldplay - Parachutes

Not a great year apart from the first 2 for me.

Eminem - Marshall Mathers LP
Radiohead - Kid A
GY!BE - Lift your Skinny Fists
Coldplay - Parachutes
JP and JR - An Evening with

These albums missed out
APC - Mer De Noms
Iron Maiden - Brave New World

One of the frustrating things about doing the Album of the Year immediately the following year is that even though I think I do a good job keeping up with new music, sometimes new bands slip by or I don't have the money to buy albums immediately.
While I know what you mean, here is the list of albums I plan to check out from 2000 and haven't done so, many of which, from what I've heard of them, could be good enough to make that top 5:

BB King/Eric Clapton - Riding with the King
Deftones - White Pony
Explosions in the Sky - How Strange, Innocence
Joe Satriani - Engines of Creation
King Crimson - The ConstruKction of Light
Sunn O))) - OO Void
Bela Fleck and the Flecktones - Outbound

Ryan Adams - Heartbreaker
At the Drive In - Relationship of Command
Johnny Cash - American III: Solitary Man
PJ Harvey - Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea
Outkast - Stankonia
POS - The Perfect Element Pt 1
