I went to my friend's house with my girlfriend awhile back for an evening of some nice face-to-face social interaction. Before we started doing some hardcore socializing I noticed something that I found really upsetting. As the party was nearing it's end I noticed that my friends little brother had been on his computer the entire time we were there (roughly 4 hours and 27 minutes). Im no child expert or anything, but every time I go to someone's house for some socializing I notice that if there are younger children in the house, they tend to spend way to much time on the computer. They'd rather sit on facebook all day long and talk to there friends on AOL 6.0 or Livejournal instead of going out and enjoying some rays. (

) Is this enslaving us from our natural tendencies to do things the way that I did them when I was growing up?
I mean, my girlfriend and I were simply out, having a decent time with friends, and we could not believe that absurdity of the situation.
Its really as if people are moving away from spending time outside and playing stickball with some neighborhood cronies to sitting their lard butts down on a computer chair for hours on end viewing their Livejournal inbox. Is Livejournal the new stickball? Really?
Does anyone else find this ridiculous, or is this just what American culture is becoming? Perhaps its a generational thing that I cant grasp or something.
I mean, really, I don't need to distract myself with this IBM garbage while Im out with my girlfriend having a blast talking about Jerry Lewis or the Mets, but thats just me.

So what did the fat kid on American Online say to his Mom when she walked in the door from her second job?

Minus the yelling part, surfing the web for four hours a day (not counting all the time I spend on it for actual work or school related stuff, which is even more than four hours) is pretty much normal for me, and has been for about 10 years now.

Hey, anybody remember that thread where tick expressed the same sentiment, albeit from a different perspective (phones and couples vs computers and kids) and was a little too passionate about it and lots of people jumped his shit and acted extremely rude, simply because it was tick that said it?

No. I was going to bring that up, then realized they are not the same topic. Tick's was about constant cellphone use, this is about kids not getting out of the house, which is crazy. Adults were saying that 15 years ago when I was growing up with the video game age booming. We still made it outside, and ended up just fine.

While part of me thinks that our younger generation is being ruined by no longer having face to face (or even vocal) conversations much anymore. But then I remember that once the telephone was thought to be the end of face to face interaction and that didn't kill it. I think everything will be fine.

That doesn't mean that I don't think kids these days spend far too much time on computers and their phones texting away though.

No Chino, I see children fixated on there computers as if they were all alone. It was obvious what I was viewing with my eyes. They were right next to me and my vision is quite good. I observed this for awhile and am quite certain of what I saw.

I've got to agree with sneaky Quad. The easiest thing to do is just ignore him if you don't like what Tick has to say. I myself see posts that rile me up but I try not to post so if to avoid causing a problem. I get how young kids don't like what Tick brings here. But in truth, I bet Tick was more like you when you when he was younger. Age and kids and responsibility changes your views on life. I know it's happened to me.

Well, Id still go outside and play. Kids will always want to play with another kid, its mainly the preteens/teens/young adults who are coming to terms with the technology available, and if they had common sense would know too much is bad...mmkay

Because we're growing up in the information age. I'm sure most people became fixated with the technology that was developing while they were growing up.
