Going to see Opeth in half an hour for the first time!
Enjoy the show! And get back with awesome Mikael quotes.
Thanks! It was amazing, and yes he did have some good quotes.
Some of them:
"This is Joakims first time in Australia.... and he hates it!"
"Martin Mendez is very happy today because he is very rich. So rich in fact that he has bought the city of Perth and made himself mayor. He has also changed the name of the city to Operth."
Talking about The Throat of Winter: "Are there any geeks in the crowd? *someone yells out 'Skyrim!!!"* We made this song for a video game. Have you played it? I haven't...... They didn't really tell us what they wanted with this so we just wrote a fucked up song that doesn't suit the game at all"
"This here is fredrik... I met him pissed in a bar rolling around with his cock out taking a shit and I pointed at him and said your in the band!"
Anyway the show was really awesome! I started off in the second row, really close to Mikael! It was a small club so I loved being so close to the band. But after a few songs I moved back because of all the moshing
It kinda ruined a few songs for me, particularly Face of Melinda which was probably my fave. I really liked the Heritage songs live, particularly I Feel the Dark was very good I thought. Still I wish people would shut up during the quiet bits, the yelling got really annoying. during the acoustic set Mikael started playing "Children of the Sea" by black sabbath, he looked over at fredrik to see if he would catch on, he did and they started playing the beginning, mikael even sang the first few lines of vocals which was pretty cool. Then he just stopped
Closure was another one of my faves, once again people just looking to mosh made it a bit worse but it was still extremely good. A Fair Judgement was amazing too! They slowed the ending right down for this and Mikael did something funny towards the end vocals: he paused for effect but held the pause with a funny expression on his face for 20 or so seconds, by the end most of the crowd was laughing
Porcelain Heart impressed me quite a bit, it used to be one of my faves from Watershed but dropped a bit, but I think it works great live. I'm not too much of a fan of drum solos but it was pretty cool I guess.
I also appreciate Nepenthe and Haxprocess a lot more, they used to be my two least faves from Heritage but I think they may rise up after seeing them. The encore was really cool. Mikael talked for a bit and asked if people like Axes drum solo. he got a large cheer and people starting chanting "solo" at fredrik and mikael looked at him and shrugged and nodded and fredrik soloed for a minute or two. Then Mikael did something hilarious: He told people to start headbanging, on the count of 3, to no music. He counted down and everyone started moshing crazily to no music, which was actually extremely funny
Then he said: "See, when theres a metal riff playing it makes you feel cool, but when there is no music it makes you feel retarded". Then they played Folklore, which was amazing and cemented itself as my favourite song from Heritage! Great ending.
Overall an amazing show! Mikaels voice was great, it was a nice small club and I really enjoyed myself, despite the crowd. The supporting act was a fairly standard prog metal band, they were alright, nothing special but not bad. I put earplugs in for them cause they were a little loud, I didn't mind that it distorted the sound a bit for them.
