Here is Opeth's setlist at Bonnaroo from a few days ago:

01. The Grand Conjuration
02. Face Of Melinda
03. The Lotus Eater
04. In My Time Of Need
05. Master's Apprentices
06. The Drapery Falls
07. Hex Omega

Sauce: https://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/blabbermouth.net/news.aspx?mode=Article&newsitemID=159328

What an odd setlist. Not to say it's bad, (I love every one of those songs), but it seems like they threw all Opeth songs into a hat and chose 7 at random. :lol

My friend was there and he said they kicked ass. He texted me during Master's Apprentices. I told him that he was seeing Opeth history, it being the first show with the new keyboardist. Lucky bastard. :yeahright

Replace Master's Apprentices with a better heavy song and The Grand Conjuration with a better heavy song like Ghost of Perdition and it would be perfect.

I dunno man. Master's Apprentices is awesome. And The Grand Conjuration, for what it's worth, was probably a good opener.

inb4 people bitch about TGC being boring.

I fucking love that song, and seeing it live in 08 was so kickass.
I felt its length in quite a few places.

The Grand Conjuration is one of those songs that's much better if you're listening to the whole album instead of the song by itself.

The Grand Conjuration seems like an odd opener. Face of Melinda would be more logically placed near the end, like as the 5th or 6th song.

But hey, Opeth are like Cardcaptors: Expect the unexpected NOW.

I'm fairly sure that The Grand Conjuration is one of Mikael's favorite songs by the band, at least that's what I've collected from facts.
They have played it quite a lot live (compared to some other songs from GR), and I remember seeing an interview with Mikael where he talked about how evil the song was, and that he was very happy about writing it. (or something like that)

As for my own thoughts on the song: It's really great. Might get a bit repetitive, but I don't really listen to it on repeat, so it's not really an issue.

My problem with The Grand Conjuration is it just doesn't really have any great moments that stick out for me.

My favourite moments in that song is the calm verses and then BAM! the heavy contrast of 'The eeeeeeeeyes of the deeeeviiiiiil!".

Man, the tour dates don't work out for me at all.  The closest dates are in the middle of the week.  My only hope is that I'm just writing at that point and not teaching.

Remember in your late teens and 20's and the weekday concerts didn't mater.  You were there. Now it's, "Damn, it's on a Tuesday?!"  "I've got to get up a 5 am to work." :lol  What the hell happened to me.

Fuck Yeah! I love that part.
I imagined the story to go more like this.

I was sitting a traffic light blaring Space Dye Vest and next to me in another car was Kevin Moore. And I'll never be open again.

I have to get up at 3 AM for work so if there's a weekday concert I usually just don't go to sleep. :lol

I loved the mix of growls and clean vocals, not many other bands do it as well as Opeth, if any. Really adds diversity to the music and makes it very unique and interesting.

I haven't listened to much. A little BWP, a little Still Life, a little Watershed, and a little Damnation. But I've gotten over growls. What pisses me off with about 95% of Death Metal is production. I like my vocals in the front of the mix, and hearing a muddy RORORORO pisses me off. If I can clearly hear the RORORORO and can make out what is being said in the RORORORORO, I'm a happy camper. Case in point, GOJIRA!!!!! :metal

edit: For example, I was listening to a Nile song the other day. Brutal guitars and drums. Absolutely kickass, then all of a sudden, RORORO came in and it was like some dude coughing up blood over the mix. Had it been produced right, I would have dug the song.
